They are bone in color with a delicate Fleur-di-lis pattern on either side painted in gold. Each also has a gold border. There are no identifying maker labels. But each does have a“Made in Japan” label affixed to the bottom. Each measures approximately 4” x 2 ½” x 3” and is in excellent condition. BUFFET DYNACTION SA 18-20 TENOR SAXOPHONE c. 1945-55
Up for auction is a Buffet Dynaction SA 18-20 tenor saxophone. Made in France. This is a rare and special horn. It's a post-WWII early Dynaction model, designed to rival the Selmer SBA. In my opinion, it is superior and I definitely prefer it to the Super Dynaction. This is a heavy horn, with elaborate engravings from top of the bell to the bottom. The bell reads"Buffet Crampon" under the Buffet logo) above"SA 18-20" above"P G e du G d Cerf" above"Paris. France" It has the darkest, duskiest, smoothest, biggest roundest gutsiest sound I've ever heard. I guess Selmer did a better marketing job back then, because there's no other explanation for the much greater value of the SBA over this Buffet. Most of the lacquer is gone- gorgeous vintage look. It has all of it's original screw-in metal ... moreresonators. The pads are in good shape and seal well- no leaks. Corks, springs and felts were checked and updated where needed. It's built solid like a rock, but purrs like a kitten. It has a dark, warm tone like the Super Dynaction, but a much more spread, gutsy sound with great resonance, power and projection in all registers- kind of like comparing a Chu Berry to an early 10M, as far as sound goes.
