Up for bid is an unusual size green blanket chest probably 1899 or later. This blanket chest has a drawer and a cupboard underneath as well as the blanket storage on top. It measures 30 inches high 29 inches wide. The drawer measures 12 inch accross and 5 inches deep. It is a green colored paint with a bit of a black outline showing through. This"dome top" immigrant trunk from Scandinavia with folk art painting. The ironwork suggests this was a dowry chest. The family name is in script. Hand hewn of pine I believe. European furniture, useful as a blanket chest. Wrought iron hardware but missing top lock. The interior is clean and has 1 inside top tray. Length is 25 inches and 17 inches tall with a depth of 14.5 inches. This is NOT as large as many trunks but quit a wonderful size. The perfect piece to place adjacent to a chair or as a strong accent piece BUT does not dominate the space. Just a charming size. I often used the truck open to display linens. No oder. There is wear to the traditional hand painting. Akin to the famous rosemaling. The fine lines were artistically drawn and still show nicely. Early PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH POLYCHROME DECORATED STRONG BOX bLANKET cHEST dOWERY CAST IRON 18TH CENTURY This is a beautiful antique hand painted PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH POLYCHROME DECORATED bLANKET cHEST. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers AND OTHER DECORATIVE DESIGNS. The flower painting is very nice and in good shape on the sides but shows some wear on the top. The trunk measures roughly 46.5 inches wide by 21.5 inches deep by 25.5 inches high. It shows a good deal of both age and exceptional quality in the construction. Much of this has double board construction and iron mounts. I am not certain it’s age but would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. It is possible that it is older since the joints and hardware are similar to chests claiming to be early to mid 1700s. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive ... morein design. I do have a key but for some reason it is not working(which may mean that is not the original key. But none-the-less it does seem to turn the tumblers) The hand forged iron locks, hinges, straps, and bolts are very good quality(even though they have been made with very primitive tools) It is unique because of the iron straps, corners, and bolts used to make this box much more secure than the average dowry chest. This box is even more unique because it has interior locking compartments. In the large compartment it has locking bars much like a strong box. So I am not sure if this is a traditional dowry/blanket chest or some sort of a strong box. It is extremely heavy at least 100 lbs.

American Federal Painted Antique Blanket Chest, Pennsylvania, Early 19th Century
FINE AMERICAN FEDERAL PAINTED BLANKET CHEST ON FLARED FRENCH FEET Pennsylvania. C. Second Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 410SLU18 A very striking use of the flared foot in the blanket chest. The taste for Neoclassical austerity quickly translated into even the most functional of rural furnishings in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. These developments are clear in the angular reeded molding around the base, the softened scrolling of the returns around the feet and the simple escutcheon employed at the lock. Beyond these design changes, the structure of the chest remains unchanged from the late eighteenth-century form- the projecting molding around the top is affixed on a tongue-in-groove with an even series of wooden pins driven into the top, this raising on it's original rectangular cast iron hinges. The case leaves all ... moredovetailing along the front, sides and back exposed- the dovetails were considered a mark of excellent craftsmanship and were a proud part of the form, something to be displayed and considered by the customer of the day. The dovetailing continues in the back of the case through the rear foot supports, these affixed with large and carefully cut dovetails to the facings, all feet also supported with the typical bevelled horizontal blocking and large vertical interior blocks(two replaced, one absent, one original) Retaining it's original burgundy red painted surface. This chest is an absolute treasure of a find- the state of preservation throughout is remarkable with only the most minor of touch ups, the whole being free of any restoration after two hundred years of use. It was clearly cherished by it's owners. The bottom of the interior has a large scrolled inscription that is illegible to us, a more tidy but still illegible inscription beside the lock(not pictured) For any serious collector of Americana. Vintage 1975 Lane Hope/Blanket Cedar Chest Declaration of Independence? New Lock
For sale is a Vintage 1975 Lane Hope/Blanket Cedar Chest with New Lock! I believe it shows the Declaration of Independence but I am not exactly sure and the company could not tell me since they have lost their vintage records in a flood. It is style# 2389-22 and the serial# is 2575190. The chest shows normal wear like scratches and scuffs. It measures 40x17x17" and has two leather straps on each side(forgot the pic of that) and one has ripped and needs to be fixed. This seems to be an unique chest since I have not been able to find one like it. There was a recall on the lock and it has been replaced by a lock sent from Lane Co. Has aged fairly well and is still a solid sturdy piece. Finish shows some wear. MASSIVE ANTIQUE MING CHINESE DOVETAILED BLANKET-CHEST OR TRUNK This incredible blanket chest is not too large. But it's massive. This chest is hewn from solid elm hardwood that is thicker than any chest I've seen. And the thicker the boards the more bold the dovetails. Dimensions are about 22" high. 38" wide& 23-1/2" deep. It is HEAVY. Both literally& figuratively. This piece was made for some serious treasure, perhaps it was made so thick that people wouldn't easily walk off with it and its presumably valuable contents. The craft. The time-worn, age-appropriate character and patina, the joinery, all absolutely stunning. The hardware is incredible; solid forged bronze handles. The bronze sun/disc on the front, and serious hand-forged strap-hinges. I remember there was competition for this piece at the time. ... moreMy house was built of heavy timbers with exposed joinery. Only this chest would do! among the many others I subsequently collected. So if you have a heavy-duty wooden house. A timber-frame, log home, restored barn, this certainly fits in and can keep up. But it would also look awesome in an apartment, loft or other home as well, and it's the perfect size for the foot of the bed, or as an incredible end-table, etc. Regarding transport. This piece is a wonderful example of handcrafted woodworking form the past. It's age is unknown but it is older. Small Antique Pine Blanket Chest, Dovetail with Bun Feet
This is an uncommon size for a blanket chest in that it is approximately the same height& depth of the most usual chests. However its width is considerably more narrow. Placed among others, its uniqueness is readily apparent. The glove box is narrow and when open, will hold up the chest's lid. The corner dovetails are all hand cut. The bun feet tops are inserted into the base of the chest, with quite wide protrusions. Parts of the chest appear to be single board. It's a nice early piece that will generate interesting looks and conversations. Weight is guestimated about 40 pounds. Dimensions are- 31-1/2"W x 22"H& 19-1/2"D. I can deliver to a local shipper. MAGNIFICENT"MOTHER OF ALL BLANKET CHESTS" GIGANTIC DOVETAILED SIX-BOARD-BOX õ Actually I think this heroic trunk is an Indonesian Dowry Chest. Or Javanese Storage Trunk(or" Grobog" in Bahasa) To my knowledge. These were the most spectacular, titanic dovetailed chests made anywhere at any time. Each side of this chest is a single gigantic slab of Teak. Cut by hand from the giant Teak trees that once were plentiful in the region. This is the Real Deal, a now rare form, and a magnificent example. The work in this piece is astounding. Every incredibly wide board is hand-planed. Revealing the rich, dark ripple of the aged teak through the subtly faceted carving. The moldings are hand-planed into the boards. The magnificent dovetails seem almost large enough to be a log cabin, the carvings lovely and tasteful subtle coloration ... moreto the wood rich& warming. The iron work is tremendous, robust, aged, hand-forged& intense. And as was the tradition, it's on these really great, large, built-in solid teak wheels! The top slab measures an incredible nearly 25" wide by 36" long in a single slab. Overall height is about 36-1/2" There are two handy compartments inside. One the full height of the interior and one with space underneath. I've been a collector of dovetailed chests for many years& I've collected some absolute beauties. This one is about the most heroic single-slab six-board box I've seen. The Indonesian Grobog chests can be very ornately carved& painted with striking colors. Indonesia is known for its amazing tradition of woodworking and crafts. I like that this one is much more simple& plain than most. And that the aged wood is allowed to be the most prominent surface. Indonesian chests like this are getting very rare. There was a time back in the 1990's when great containers of Indonesian Antiques were being shipped over. But like the flood of large Chinese Antique chests& cabinets that seemed to crest around the time of the Three Gorg

American Sheraton Paint Decorated Antique Blanket Chest. Pennsylvania 1820's View the entire slide show here(via Flickr) Very Fine Lancaster County. Pennsylvania Blanket box, circa 1820-1840. Superbly flame decorated front and side panels, with green trim. Nice deep red and black colour. Rust red painted turned feet mounted on the corners. All pine dovetailed construction. Through dovetails on the front, and blind dovetails on the back. The blind dovetails on the back is a unusual feature, which requires more cabinetmaking skill than the standard dovetail. Super clean interior. With the original iron lock, key, hinges and brass escutcheon. This blanket chest is a wonderful size. 44" wide, 24" tall, 21" deep. Condition: Very fine clean condition. Minor dings and scratches. The right side lid back edge. Has a stabilised split ... morein the wood, near the hinge mounting, it is fine at the moment, but might want to get fixed with glue and clamps. the keeper is broke, and the chest will not lock shut. Loss/wear to the paint ont he lid. A age related split going split in the top, due to age shrinkage.

ANTIQUE PAINTED BLANKET CHEST FROM THE MARITIMES
A GREAT DECORATIVE ITEM FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON1 A painted pine blanket chest discovered in Nova Scotia. It is solid pine boards with through dovetailed corners. The top measures 19 1/2" wide by 46 1/2" long. Inside it measures 16 1/2" by 41 1/2" by 18" deep. The overall height from the floor is 25 1/2" It is quite fancifully painted on the front with a date of 1890. It has a keep with a lid inside and a great lock and key. The lid shows more age and wear than the front with some staining. The photos are representative of the overall chests condition. The item is for pickup in Laconia N.H. by either buyer or his agent. No crating is available by seller.
