This mask with sublime exoression comes from the Dan of Cote d'Ivoire. Masks with a long hornbill beak like this one are also found among the Mau people who live in the northwest part of the Dan territory. The surface as well as the interior of the mask show a dark black encrusted patina. The holes in the back were used to attach costume and other decorations. The Dan people. Who live in Liberia and the Ivory Coast, are governed largely by secret societies. The Leopard Society acts as a major regulator of Dan life, and initiates young men. Famous for their masks, the Dan believe that spirits, known as"Du, live in the forests and manifest themselves to humans in masks and masquerades, instructing and sustaining the Dan in life. Thus masks are used as agents of social control. Among the Mau masks with hornbill horns are used in the men's association, Koma. The tag says"Ponca. The backside of the cardboard backing says"Mrs. Buffalo Chief Sioux City- a Ponca Indian. 2 Turtle Pin- I'm not sure if this was Indian made. it is a goldtone pin of a turtle. Approx. 2" from nose to tail. Tag says" Modern white man's adaptation of the Sioux symbol. The cardboard backing says"Diffraction Grating" Turtle- Indians fertility symbol. 3 Choctaw leather and metal beads. Not sure what this is. I'm guessing it hangs on a coat. Made of red leather and metal beads. Has what looks like an old hair tie for a loop ... moreat the top. approx 5.75" from end to end. This is tagged Choctaw. These came from the estate of an Iowa woman who was a coordinator for missionaries in the 1960's. They brought back gifts to her from the various Reservations they visited. They have the name DoAll marked on the shank and 1_1/2 also. They are three flute HSS.Square cut, center cutting taper mills. I also have 2 degree mills as well made by conical tool and weldon. 1950s/ 60s TWA 3 WHITE Toy Plastic Airplane Pieces Premium Cereal Promo L@@K
Purchased from the estate of a long-time TWA employee. Three white plastic toy or cereal premium airplane plane pieces. 2 of them are DC-9 models. They measure 3.5 inches long. Wing span is 3 inches. They are made of rigid plastic. Light wear as shown, some very light surface stains, and one has some plastic on the tail wing from the mold that can be removed. The other, I believe, is a constellation model. It measures 2.25 inches long and 3 inches wide in wing span. The plastic on this one has a little bend to it- still rigid but somewhat softer. There is a small little string that is wrapped around the back tail, which I've left. Also the bottom has a glue residue spot stain, probably from being put on a stand at one time. TWA is in red on the left wing. I suspect these were given away during the 1950s or 1960s. Enjoy! Sorry. No international ... morebidders.
