Original, steel-engraved map of the World Mercator Projection 2 sheet- Texas as Republic, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. This is an awesome work of art. The World of Mercarto's Projection full colored map of the world. I have never seen one of these maps with animals before. Lion. Elephant, giraffe, monkeys appearing in their natural habitat and stunningly depicted. The colors are amazing. This really is great. Neat in a den or fun in a child's room. It is framed and measures 21 1/2" x 17 3/4" The upper left hand corner of the frame needs to be pushed together a bit. The seam has come apart. Other than that- excellent condition. Any questions. The chart measures 12.5 x 19.5 inches and is in excellent condition. Swiss-born Arnold Henri Guyot(1807–1884) was the first professionally trained geographer to hold an academic position in the United States. After his migration to this country in 1848 he lived for several years in Massachusetts.
