This detailed and scholarly example of"historical cartography" is representative of D'Anville's work at the peak of his career- beautifully engraved in the"modern" style he advocated and elegantly composed for a satisfying aesthetic presentation in an unusually large(75 cm x 52.5 cm image area) format. Walter Goffart in his definitive study Historical Atlases- The First 300 Years observed that while"Nicolas ... moreSanson. The father of French cartography" considered historical cartography"an object of the most serious concern. an even brighter star of the French School Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville won his most enduring fame in mapping ancient lands. It is a mark of the esteem in which D'Anville's historical maps were held that the British publishers Laurie and Whittle acquired the plate after his death and reissued the map in this edition- more than thirty years after its original publication.
