Nürnberg, engraved circa 1720, printed circa 1742 We are pleased to offer this exceptional original celestial chart by the renowned astronomer and mathematician(1677-1750) from his masterwork the Atlas Coelestis published in 1742 by the firm of Homann Erben(Heirs) The leading German map publisher of the 18th century. Founded by the Imperial Geographer Johann Baptist Homann(1664-1724) in 1702 and later managed by his descendants and the noted astronomer. The Homann firm published a number of the plates from this monumental collection of astronomical and cosmographical charts for some twenty years prior to the completion of the work. For example, this chart and all the other constellation charts are believed ... moreto have been engraved between 1716 and 1724 while other plates for the atlas were not completed until the early 1740s. The constellations are projected on a gnomonic projection with geocentric orientation as of the winter solstice of 1730. Accordingly, Doppelmayr's subtitle for the chart which translates as"depicting the fixed stars for the year of Christ 1730 according to the rules of arithmetic and geometry" reflects that when the chart was created the positions of the constellation lay in the future. One of the most decorative plates of the entire Atlas Coelestis. The chart features the constellations of the early winter zodiac including Scorpio, Sagittarius and part of Capricorn along with other fancifully depicted constellations- all masterfully engraved and quite possibly by Homann himself. The chart is flanked on both sides by twin tables of the major constellations with each star or nebula identified and located by coordinates and their position in the constellation figures. Without question one of the most famous Stieler plates. The design was established by Stieler himself in the 1820s and continued to appear in the atlases for decades as a kind of trademark map. The chart was of course updated to reflect new data and discoveries, e.g. the inclusion of Neptune here which was unknown in Stieler's day.
