Up for auction is an old antique map of the Eastern Hemisphere showing Asia. Europe, Africa, and Australia. Below the map it says, Published by Samuel Walker, Boston. I am not exactly sure what year this map was printed, but I believe this map is from the mid 1800's. The overall condition is fair with good color, but there are some yellowish brown spots that you can see in the pictures. The spots are probably from age, but perhaps it took on some moisture at some point over the years. The paper though is great with a nice cream color and no tears, creases, or other defects to mention. The size of the entire paper is 10.5" x 8.5" and the diameter of the map is 7.25" This map is guaranteed to be an original and not a reproduction. Original, steel-engraved map of Eastern Hemisphere- Australia, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. The routes of various important explores are noted, including Cook, Vancouver, Perouse, and the return route taken by Cook's ship, the Resolution, following his death in Hawaii. This map offers fairly accurate shorelines throughout. In Africa, the interior remains unexplored except for the Congo, the Cape Colony, the gold mining regions of Monomotapa, and Abyssinia. Similarly, the coasts of Australia are accurate but the interior is vague and unknown. In Asia there are several notations regarding unexplored territories ... morein southwestern China and Central Asia. Far to the north, in the high Arctic, there is a partial land mass with the note Coast discovered by the Hunters employed by m. Liakhov" This land refers to the Lyakhov Islands, discovered in the 1770s by Russian Fur trader Ivan Lyakhov. These islands, part of New Siberia, were said to have such an abundance of fossilized mammoth ivory that many of the smaller islands were formed from it in their entirety. Lyakhov himself brought back 10,000 tons of Ivory on his first trip and subsequent traders are said to have brought back as much as 100,000 tons in the following 20 years. Drawn by L. Herbert and engraved by Samuel Neele under the direction of John Pinkerton. The first time being completed in 1691. His book of his adventures"New Voyage around the World" was a wild success and translated into several other languages. In 1688 his boat was beached in north western Australia and he was the first man of English descent to see Australia(New Holland) This map of the world illustrates the voyage of Captain Dampier Dampier but continued on his own. The routes of well-known explorers, including Halley and Abel Tasman, are noted. Is known more for his authorship of the five volume"Description de l'Univers' one of the earliest printed miniature, illustrated world history/geography books.
