1797 Vosgien Map- Mappe Monde Dictionnaire Geographique Portatif was a very succesful publication during the second half of the eighteenth century. The author is a'M. Vosgien' who turns out to be a priest from Lorraine(thus'Vosges' Jean-Baptiste Ladvocat. This popular work always contained two fine maps, Europe and the World, from an unknown engraver and was published by Didot in Paris. The map of the World has pleasant clear engraving. Offered here without reserve is this hand colored map that appears to date to the 17th century. I am. However, no expert on maps and am willing to be told it is a restrike of a later date(though I am certain it cannot be earlier than mid 19th century. I should note that the paper is not as white as it appears in my pictures. Seems my camera has bleached things out a bit) To assist in forming a judgment, my last picture shows the backside of the map held up to the sun so that you can see that watermarking to the paper. Its all hand colored. no contemporary lithography or photo offset here. and measures 21 1/2" x 17 1/4" map image measures 18" x 13" Although all on a single sheet of paper, there is a very clean, sharp crease running down the center to suggest this was originally in a book. Antique World Map, Hand Colored Lithograph- Double Hemisphere, BEAUTIFUL!
Hey map collectors. What is this thing? I bought it at Stanford University. At the Treasure Market, where supporters donate wonderful items for sale. It's a fundraiser for the Cantor Art Museum. I could tell it was old. But apparently it's a very old REPRINT, and it's reprinted from a map in France, at the Bibliotheque Nationale. You can tell, because the map in France has the same tear in the lower left corner-see photo#6. THAT map is an original, from 1652, and is in black and white. The map in THIS auction appears to be a lithograph, and it has very delicate hand-coloring. There also appears to be a faint seal of some kind. As I show in closeup photo# 9. How do I know this map is old? In photos#4 and#5 you can see that bugs have nibbled the edges on 2 sides. Also. It had been framed professionally- in the 1920s or 1930s. The ... moreframe was nothing special, but it was old. The framer backed this print with cardboard. The hand coloring is done in yellows. Oranges, and browns- perfect for fire, which the original engraver, Pieter Goos, managed to work into several images. My research indicates this is based on an earlier map by Hondius. This version. Though has a border filled with illustrations of couples from various nations. There are also 4 scenes of the seasons, panels depicting the elements, and outlines of the constellations. 1782 Kitchin Map- The World Thomas Kitchin is a name frequently encountered on maps from the mid to late 1700's. Prodigious as his output was. It did not stop him from bankruptcy, a fate shared by many of his fellow cartographers. Kitchin issued atlases on his own as well as in collaboration with Thomas Jefferys and Emanuel Bowen. He also worked for many other others, including Salmon, for whom he provided the maps for his'Gazetter' This fascinating map of the World is from a 1782 edition of that work. A scarce and collectable engraved map of the World by Herman Moll. Published by John& Carrington Bowles, London, about 1750. Very attractively presented in a walnut frame and gilt slip. A fine double-hemisphere map of the World clearly depicting the trade winds. Equator and tropics, with the route taken by William Dampier on his voyage around the World marked by a dotted line. The map is surrounded by several smaller astronomical diagrams and a fine dedication cartouche to King George. Although German by birth. Herman Moll(1654?1732) was working in London by 1678-9 and became the foremost British publisher of the early 18th century.
