Antique chromolithograph plate which has been rescued from a disbound copy of'Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. Date Published: Printed in 1877 by Bibliographisches Institut. Leipzig, Germany Print size: 11 1/4 inches by 9 1/4 inches The lithograph has a characteristic patina which is natural for vintage paper. But is in very good condition- this print is over 136 years old. The plate was folded inside the book and has the original centrefold, which may seem more visible on the scanned image than the actual print up for auction. The true detail and colour quality of the lithograph cannot quite be captured by the scan, but gives a good general impression of the real piece. The originator of the print up for auction ... morewas Joseph Meyer(May 1796- June 1856) who published the respected German encyclopedia. Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. Hondius had acquired from the map in 1604 by Gerard Mercator's heirs the copper plates. 1606 appeared his first Amsterdam edition of Mercator's Atlas complete. Augmented by 37 new cards that had Hondius acquired by different authors. This stock now 144 cards was in the 2nd Amsterdam edition of 1607 extended for a further two cards. Already in the following year, the second edition was sold out and a third edition appeared as unchanged reprint of the edition of 1607. The map shows the whole of the North Pole(as then known) showing Europe. Presque Isle, the northern portion of North America, and northern Asia and more.
