Ancient Old Ornament Bronze Omega Fibula Brooch (JN15_0110)
Ancient Old Ornament Bronze Omega Fibula Brooch A fibula is an ancient brooch. Technically. The Latin term, fibulae, refers to Roman brooches; however, the term is widely used to refer to brooches from the entire ancient and early medieval world that continue Roman forms. Nevertheless, its use in English is more restricted than in other languages, and in particular post-Roman brooches from the British Isles are just called brooches(for example, the penannular brooches) where in German they would probably be fibulae. Unlike most modern brooches, fibulae were not only decorative; they originally served a practical function: to fasten clothing, such as cloaks. In ancient Rome and other places where Latin was used, the same word denoted both a brooch and the fibula bone because a popular form for brooches and the shape of the bone were thought to resemble one another. There are hundreds of different types of fibulae. They are usually divided into families that are based upon historical periods. Geography, and/or cultures. Fibulae are also divided into classes that are based upon their general forms. Fibulae were originally used to fasten clothing. They represent an improvement on the earlier straight pin which was less secure and could fall out. While the head of the earlier straight pin was often decorated. The bow or plate of the fibula provided a much increased scope for decoration. Among some cultures, different fibula designs had specific symbolic meanings. They could refer to a status or profession such as single woman, married woman, man, warrior, or chief. Some Roman-era fibulae may symbolize specific ranks or positions in the Roman legions or auxiliary. In some cultures, fibulae were worn in pairs and could be linked by a length of chain. Valuable Ancient European Bronze Age Spiral Fibula Brooch Sculpture - 1000 BC
A large and beautifully preserved central European Bronze Age spiral fibula. Dating to 800- 700 BC. The stunning form and symmetry of this fibula elevates it from a simple brooch to a decorative artwork of great quality. A highly decorative and extremely fine ancient display piece. One of the finest and best preserved Bronze Age spiral fibula we have handled. The piece has been expertly forged into two conjoined spirals of wired disc, meeting in a pair of tight coils at the centre which form a figure of eight at the back. The original pin and catch plate are still fully intact and in place. Very little art from the European Bronze Age survives to us today. Yet artefacts such as this give us an idea of the motifs that would have been ubiquitous in daily life; carved into wooden objects and tattooed onto bodies. The conjoined spiral is amongst ... morethe oldest of images from ancient Europe. Prevalent as early as the Neolithic, and likely had significant ritual or supernatural connotations which are now lost to us. Mounted in this way. The artefact becomes not just a functional item of everyday use, but a distinctly sculptural piece of Bronze Age art redolent with meaning. Height mounted: 6 1/2 inches. Height alone: 4 1/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. A high quality example preserved with the original pin. Unrestored. Please note that this piece will arrive with a beautiful. Top quality, bespoke bronze stand, produced by Colin Bowles, mount maker to Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. 1980’s. Please note: This is a genuine. Highly desirable Bronze Age artefact. This piece is offered for sale with a very low reserve to promote our extensive inventory of antiquities and ancient coins, which you will find at the following link: http:stores.ebay.com/antiquitiessale Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of a
