CHAMBER POT THUNDER MUG ANTIQUE IRONSTONE HOTEL ENGLAND POTTERY
Hopefully someone will recognize the name on the bottom and can identify where this antique chamber pot came from. English- backstamp on the bottom reads. Francis Sparks of the West, 144 Oxford Street, London W. Excellent condition and believed to be ironstone although it does not indicate this on the bottom. Large at 9" in diameter at the top and 5 1/4" tall. Excellent condition with a half dime size rough and discolored spot on the inside near where the handle meets the base. And a very tiny, very old nick in the rim. Trimmed in shiny gold glaze with very slight wear. Trimmed more with gold on the handle and one circle around the body of the base.

A jordan, a jerry, a po(possibly from French: pot de chambre) a piss pot, a potty, or a thunder mug) is a bowl-shaped container with a handle, and often a lid, kept in the bedroom under a bed or in the cabinet of a nightstand and generally used as a toilet at night. In Victorian times, some chamber pots would be built into a cabinet with a closable cover. A.J. Wilkinson(Arthur J. Wilkinson. Royal Staffordshire Pottery) was a pottery or potbank at Newport in Burslem, England. The pottery had formerly been operatedby Richard Alcock. Who enlarged the works extensively. On Alcock's death in 1881, the owners became Wilkinson& Hulme ... moreand in 1885 to Arthur J. Wilkinson. The works at first produced earthenware for the home market. K, T, K" was for the Knowles, Taylor and Knowles Company which used that name from 1872 to 1931. The"Granite" in the mark was the company's name for it's ironstone ware, a vitreous china. Known History: This Chamber Pot was purchased used somewhere in Western Washington in the 1970's. And has been in our home for over 35 years. Condition: We can find no damage or defects. Which is remarkable because we used it for years to store an extra roll of toilet paper and I don't know how many times it got bumped or kicked against the cast iron bathtub. Measurements: opening of pot is 9 inches in diameter. Handle makes it 11 inches across, foot of pot is 5 inches in diameter, lid of pot is 9 ½ inches in diameter, pot and lid stand 8 inches tall. The lid has a fine crackle glaze. There is one chip in the outer rim the lid. And two smaller nicks in the inner rim of the lid. The pot has a star crack on the inside which shows a small nick on the outside. A small bit of glaze is missing from the outside here. Other than the flaws mentioned here. Doesn't shwo at all as on the inner surface mostly and the flat area of the lid to the edge is pretty wide anyway. Insure of it's age but in research I found this info: Alfred Meakin(Ltd) Alfred Meakin(Tunstall) Ltd: 1875- Alfred Meakin(Ltd. Royal Albert, Victoria and Highgate Potteries, Tunstall. From c.1913 renamed"Alfred Meakin(Tunstall) Ltd Note the addition of"England" from 1891. Note the addition of"Ltd.
