Offered is a refectory table. Hand-carved from European walnut. Very likely from the late 17th C ent ury. N icks. Dings, cracks and damage to its legs over past 300 or 400 years are consistent with much furniture of this ag e. It still remains a fine example of Baroque craftsmanship and artistry. The two rows of decorative spike heads imbedded in the top are a medieval touch and an indication the table could ha ve been made in the late Renaissance period. However. The flowing curves of the trestles and cross bars are decidedly Baroque in style. Although the table's o rigin and age are unknown to me. It is known that European walnut was the primary wood used in furniture of this type in Mediterranean countries-France, Italy and Spain- up until the late 1600s. At which time walnut was becoming rare. After the 1680s. We see oak bec oming ... morethe prima r y wood for this typ e of furniture in Europe. Note: Slotted s crews securing the cross ties on the underside of the table top were probably installed during the 19th C entury or in the early 20th Ce ntury. Inasmuch as screws of this ty pe did not come into use until the 19th Century. Th e previous o wner sa id they were already there when she acquired the table in the 1940s. Th e y are evidence that the cross ties were added as a repair at a much later date than 1680. This fine 19th century table features its original turtle shaped marble top. Drop carved accents below the table apron on each side, its original rich finish on the walnut wood and casters are intact on all four feet. This set includes one table. Two expansion leaves, eight chairs, and two removable load bearing center legs. It was originally purchased in the late 1950's in the Chicagoland area. Probably from Marshall Field and Company, manufactured by the White Furniture Co. At its smallest configuration it seats four. But can expand to fit either six or eight. All components are in good to excellent mechanical condition. But the chairs are overdue for refinishing. The main table was refinished in 1986, but the leaves still have their original finish. All chairs were reupholstered in about 1999 and plenty of cloth was saved from that job. My parents were the original owners and I inherited this item in the late'70s. We are pleaseds to offer this unusual and very nice antique wooden bowl on legs. The piece(dough bowl. Night stand, accent table) features an old wooden bowl(appears to be walnut) which is mounted on a beautiful base. The base features 4 legs with center pedestal support. The legs also appear to be walnut and have very nice, turned wood lines. The legs have beautiful, gilt iron and glass, ball and claw feet. The bowl, which does have some minor knife or utensil marks has been polished and has a beautiful sheen. The legs have more of a matte finish. The piece is in very good, antique condition. There are a few minor scuffs but nothing major or distracting and these can certainly be resolved. The feet are in good condition. Table measures 62" long x 39" wide by 31 Tall and the finish on the piece is very nice condition.Amazinglyl not lot of nicks or dings even on the bottom of the feet and the top has none whatsoever.This piece I fully believe is pre 1900.There are two minor issues and I have included close up photos.There is one 4 long piece of applied carving missing on one end. On one side the top looks to be slightly lifted and needs clamped and glued back down.One veneer patch as shown in the picture and not a bad job.Table extremely heavy and sturdy and the carving is beautiful particularly on the legs and the center braces.
