Item# 120011RYI24 ... moreThis listing is for a remarkable and very fine Sheraton Pembroke table of the Federal Period. Crafted in New York during the first quarter of the 19th Century. It is a magnificent work, using the most incredible solid mahogany boards available for the overall presentation. Each leaf is a very broad single plank of full grained glowing mahogany, the middle most board a full 21 1/4" across the grain; each was flawlessly planed by hand until the surface was perfectly smooth, at which point a french polish was applied. This is a labor intensive and difficult finish to apply, layer after countless layer of shellac being rubbed into the surface by hand, but when done properly the result is breathtaking. The surface absolutely shimmers, the deep reds of the mahogany glowing through with utter brilliance. The leaves are notched and rounded. Giving an overall"cloud" form to each hanging surface, these lifting over hand forged iron hinges with entirely original screws. The top projects just slightly over the front, lining up perfectly along the sides such that the leaves rest squarely against the frame when in dropped form. One side of the table has a faux drawer with cockbead molding around it. The other side has a very deep drawer without cockbead molding, both having bold original polished brass stamped handles. Inside of the drawer. A white label is affixed on the left side from a dealer who once carried the table"Edwin C. Ahlberg, Antique Furniture, New Haven, Conn" The drawer is hand dovetailed at the back, nailed at the front, chamfered on the thick bottom along the sides to rabbet into the drawer frame and is nailed at the back of the drawer with a modern nail. We believe the drawer was shortened, as the absence of dovetails at the front would suggest along with the absence of a chamfered front edge to the underside of the board. Our as

Early mahogany pembroke table in very good condition. Probably Philadelphia. Original brass caps on each leg. String lightwood inlay on the selvedge of the top and drop leaves. Pine secondary wood. There is an age split on one of the top corners. Refer to the photos for detail. There is also a ring that goes through the finish on one drop leaf from what appears to be the outline of a flowerpot that sat on it. Antique Pembroke Table Would Benefit From Refinishing Drop Leaf Brass Trim
This auction is for what I believe to be a genuine Pembroke Table. It needs complete restoration to look great. I think the current finish is original. It has stains, chips out, needs sanded to be perfectly flat, etc. Has all the brass fittings you would expect. Great table, its about 36 by 23 with the ends down, 36 by 41 with them up. Drawer comes out, has the brass rollers on the legs. Belonged to an lawyer who had passed away, he used it in his office and did not take care of it as he should have. This is certainly over 100 years old, coarse wood used for the base of the drawer, well made, dovetail joints in the drawer, well made piece and would be worth significantly more if restored, in my opinion. I think the wood is mahogany but I am not good with woods, I know its not pine or oak, other than that my knowledge is iffy. Crafted with a very dense and vibrant grained Cuban mahogany top. The flow of the grains is incredibly attractive, the intense ribbing through the center made accentuated by the smooth straight grains along the edges of the leaves. Lifting over triangular wings that easily swing from their resting place integral with the frame, the surface is broad and highly functional. Both leaves retain their three original hand forged iron hinges. A single drawer eases in and out of the front of the table with a brass bail ... morepull(replaced) the drawer front framed in an applied cockbead molding around most of the dovetails of the front joint. The bottom is deeply chamfered with triangular blocks set in the bevel to secure the drawer bottom firmly. Finishing the lower edge of the apron on both sides of the table is a thin tri-bead molding over the tapering Marlborough legs embellished with scrolling returns with a shapely"domed" saltire stretcher joining into the legs with a tenon; these lift vertically in a cyma-curving climb embellished by offset scrolls above and below each stretcher until they ultimately join half-lapped centrally. Table measures 42" long x 22" wide x 28.5" high with leaves extended. Measures 23.5" long x 22" wide x 28.5" high with leaves dropped. This exceptional table was the personal property of Frank Finley Merriam. 28th Governor of California from 1934-1939. He famously defeated the writer Upton Sinclair in the 1934 governor's race. This beautiful Pembroke table graced the Governor's private home in Long Beach Calif. for many decades before being handed down to family members.

Nice inlaid drawer front. And stripe inlaid legs. the back of the table inlay matches the front drawer inlay. 7/8" thick walnut top and leaves. very nice drawer. Thin board pine sides, with a thin board walnut hand chamfered drawer bottom. all walnut chassis construction. The leaf supports are walnut. the top is attached to the via 2 dovetailed cross members. Very unusual construction for the top attachment. the table has been refinished most likely in the 1960's. one leg has been has been reattached. Beautiful antique Pembroke table in mahogany. With two small leaves and a drawer in one end. This table also boasts gorgeous rope-turned legs and a warm patina on top, with all the old scratches, marks and slight depressions that show it has been loved and used throughout its history. It's impossible to reproduce this patina on modern pieces. The table stands 28 5/8" tall and its top. With both leaves down, measures 17" across by 34 3/8" wide. Each leaf is 11 1/8" so with both raised to their full position, the top then measures 38" across. The drawer has a brass handle(not the original) The outside measurements of the drawer are 11 1/2" across by 15 1/2" deep by 2 7/8" tall; the inside measurements are 10 1/4" by 14 1/4" by 2 5/8" respectively. Uncommon antique Eastlake drop leaf table in the Pembroke style. This piece has a gently curved table top with molded edges and squared corners. Each side of the table has its own drawer with an ornate brass bail handle pull. An applied fret-carved design accents the area under each drawer and is mirrored in the carved brackets below. The legs are braced by X-shaped stretchers with a simple pierced decoration. When extended. The hinged drop leaves are supported by slide out wooden pieces. This beautiful table is made from a fine-grained wood- most likely walnut- and has a medium dark finish a wonderful aged patina. The table is in good antique condition. However there is wear consistent with age and use. The top of the table shows signs of wear to the finish, and there is some separation to boards along the edges. Please see pictures. POWERFUL SOLID HONDURAN MAHOGANY BOSTON PEMBROKE TABLE-EARLY 19TH CENTURY With our compliments we are honored to offer you this exceptionally high quality solid figured Honduran mahogany Boston Circa 1820's Hepplewhite period large Pembroke table. The top is made from three solid single planks of the absolute best Honduran mahogany with a big bold grain. It has a cock bead molded drawer with a great hand chamfered base panel and stands on gracefully reed carved and turned legs. Each of the leaves are supported by double finger joint carved leaf supports. We initially thought this was a good average Boston Hepplewhite period table but upon closer inspection we discovered that it was something very special. No attention to detail was sparred and the weight of this dense mahogany is substantial. The table is in a great original finish. Very ... moregood condition with its original brasses. We note one leaf got a bit more sun exposure than the other but its very gradual in tone. There are some very small seasoning splits on the tables leafs which is a typical issue with cuts of this mahogany as thick and wide as these. The table is 39 1/2" long, 24" wide with its leaves down and 56" wide with the leafs lock up.
