There is gold gilt paint which separates the two woods and which adds to the beauty and character of the tables. Ornate brass accents the wood. There is a pierced brass raised trim which borders most of the top circumference. There are large brass rosette swags/drops on each side of the drawer areas. But stools such as the two we show here were the primary seating in most Qing Dynasty(1644-1911) homes. Chairs were mostly reserved for the very wealthy. I also found out that an easy trick to discern the earlier stools from the later variety is that the lower to the ground the stool is. The earlier the date. Stools became higher with successive years and European influence. Another intriguing clue is that style. Shape and joinery techniques varied by region and province back when these were made. These differences and differences in woods used can identify age and province of origin for most of these antique Chinese stools and benches. Tables show the signature Jalk conical legs and fasteners but what sets these apart is the inverted tops. Unusually the bulldozed edge is on the top surface whereas on this pair they are on the bottom. This appears to be original and there are no signs of the tops being flipped and the veneer grain on the underside is in fact mahogany indicating it was meant to be on the bottom. Bathroom, hall, or stair landing. The pair would also make great end tables in a den, living room or family room. Their small size offers flexibility and utility. Each matching stand is hand-carved solid wood with dove-tail drawer construction. Their fine quality is evidenced by the detailed incised and applied carvings on the front of each drawer.
