With three shaped legs with mounts depicting birds clenching swags of chain, stretcher with turned finial and additional mounts and swag chains, and are distinguished for their extraordinary hand-painted wooden lids that depict song birds in nature, surrounded by a ribbon of inlaid marquetry with mother of pearl, with pair of brass handles. Each measures approximately 32" tall and 17.5" across. Condition of each is very good. There are visible cracks, scratches and nicks, consistent with age. ANTIQUE VICTORIAN DEEP WALNUT FRAME WITH BLACK EBONIZED WOOD ACCENT AROUND THE OPENING FOR THE GLASS AND NEAR THE OUTER EDGE OF THE FRAME. Frame is circa 1880’s– 1890’s. Original finish on the walnut frame in good condition. The frame contains an antique print from the same era– 1880– 1890’s– looks like an engraving or etching with color accent on the woman’s dress and hat. The picture is a graceful woman ice skater. With a fur muff. Hazy snow background. This may be an illustration taken from an antique book. Two names on the lower side of the print– see photo– one looks like C. H.Kuechler and…R Bon… on the lower right side– not clear. Outer measurements of the frame are 14 inches by 16 inches. ANTIQUE EASTLAKE INCISED EBONIZED & GRAINED FRAME 14X16PRINT GIRL VIOLIN & DOGS
ANTIQUE VICTORIAN EBONIZED& INCISED WOODEN FRAME WITH PRINT OF A LITTLE GIRL PLAYING THE VIOLIN. AND 3 DOGS HOWLING TO THE MUSIC. Outer edges of the frame are ebonized. And the inside has grain painting and two gold tone edges around the opening for the glass. Outer measurements of the frame are 13 ¾ inch by 15 ¾ inch. The frame is wood. Covered with a gesso, then“EBONIZED” to go along with many furniture pieces of that era. The black gesso has been carved to give an incised(carved into the ebonized wood into the white gesso) geometric design in each of the 4 corners– the frame has Eastlake Victorian feeling to it. LOTS OF DETAILS ABOUT THE FRAME– I HAVE PROBABLY MADE IT SOUND WORSE THAN IT IS. BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW THE CONDITION BEFORE YOU BID. The design on each of the 4 corners is in pretty good condition- a few spots are ... moremissing. Especially the upper left corner. I have pictured each corner so you can see condition. The frame is solid– corners are tight– no wiggles. Brown graining is in good original condition. Gold tone layers have some discolorations and a little missing– see pictures. The frame with print. Glass, and cardboard backing weighs just less than 4 pounds. The ebony finish on the outer edges has touch-up’s to the black finish over the years. On the wall the frame looks fine– has a nice presentation. But up close you can see where parts of the gesso have come off and have been touched up with black finish. The vintage print is from the 1970– 1980’s– a copy of an antique Victorian print. Print is in good condition. No stains, no tears. A very sweet subject– the little girl playing the violin. Dogs howling, and a kitten that looks as though it is screeching at the whole thing. Outer measurements of the frame are 13 ¾ inches by 15 ¾ inches. VICTORIAN AESTHETIC MOVEMENT EBONIZED& UPHOLSTERED SOFA. C. LATE 19TH CENTURY This unusual Victorian Aesthetic Movement sofa is English and dates to the late 19th century. The frame of the sofa is ebonized with gilt highlights and the piece is presently upholstered with a dark blue corduroy fabric. The sofa measures 72"w x 26-1/2"d x 24-1/2"h and the seat measures 65"w x 25-1/2"d x 13-1/2"h. The upholstered arms and back of the sofa are rounded and supported by a series of turned spindles attached to a rail for each of the arms and the back. The upholstered portion of each arm is further supported on the front by an upright post carved with floral motifs. The seat is an"old sprung" seat with its original springs and webbing. A beautiful Wenge veneered top on a solid ebonized Oak"X Form" base and stretcher. All original parts and woods. There is no evidence of there ever having been any alteration or restoration. The top has some discoloration from the sun and a couple small areas(1" in diam. where the veneer is lifting creating a very slight rise in the veneer. The wenge has an"open grain" finish and the grain has some deeper/longer pores than in other places- if undesirable these can be easily filled. For a dealer you may want to restore this piece and there is little to do to make it perfect again. For the casual purchaser you can leave it as is and be happy. Early Goth Ebonized Cast Iron Ansonia "Calais" Clock With Sword Hands!
Ansonia Cast Iron“ Calais” Shelf Clock. Very Goth looking with a Steampunk flair. But this clock was made in the early 1900s before Ansonia went bankrupt in 1929. Beautiful ebonized cast iron body with brass bezel with fabulous detailing. Dimensions 13 ½”x 7 ½” x 4 ½” weight about 10 lbs. Sucker is heavy for its size. Movement is marked“Ansonia Clock Company New York. USA patented June 18, 1882. The hands that show minutes and hour are actually swords– how cool is that? We have a key for the clock and it has been wound. But the pendulum stops after awhile. Clock has obviously been well-taken care of and hails from a well-known collector's estate in NC. Asking $165. Unique Antique Jansen Louis XVI Ebonized Mahogany Gilt Carved Shabby Display
Antique Jansen Louis XVI Ebonized Mahogany Display Desk This maginificent display table/bureauplat is charmingly shabby. Though unsigned. It is almost certainly by Maison Jansen. The style, the quality of workmanship, the materials, are clearly of the highest quality. Please see picture number 6 for a close up of the underlying wood grain, which appears to be mahogany(though walnut is not an impossibility) The framed glass top. Reveals 2 separators with gilded scrolling, providing areas for 3 locked drawers. The locks are brand new and not original. This piece would make an impressive jewelry or fine fashion arts display case of pure perfection for any shop featuring an upscale shabby chic style. A nearly identical piece is shown in the June 2013 New York Times Style Magazine on pages 86-87 STYLE: The ebonized mahogany and carved and gilt ... moremolding identify this piece as an interpretation of neoclassical Louis XVI style favored by Maison Jansen and European early 20th century royalty and the Kennedy White House. The republic style legs place it most likely in the 1920-30's era. WORKMANSHIP: The intricate carving. Gilded moldings, and ebonizing are of days-gone-by and simply unavailable in today's market. Though the legs appear somewhat fragile supporting the weight of the overall table, they are solidly attached with heavy metal flanges and grommets. The drawers show the dovetail joints(pictures 9 and 10) All joining of the piece are solid and exhibit NO separation. MATERIALS: Though wood identification is difficult with painted furniture. There are enough small areas with worn paint to show the underlying wood. This is unquestionably a very hard wood, and given the reputation and standards of Maison Jansen, this is almost certainly mahogany. The only mark found is on the bottom of one of the drawers which reads"A Agullo Chapas Finas de Medera" R Agullo is a high-end supplier of wood to cabinet makers in Madrid founded in 1926. Very unusual set of early 19th century Sheraton-style gaming chairs. Made of ebonized wood with finely incised details and upholstered seats. These chairs used arranged around small tables in 19th century card game salons, for players to sit as they played whist and other games of that era. Although the chairs are small and delicate looking, they are quite sturdy in use, as proved by the span of time they've endured) and are still in fine shape. The tapestry-style upholstery is recent and all seats are clean and in excellent condition. Each chair has a small matching throw pillow to use on the back, as shown, or to place elsewhere to complement the set. Hard to find a full set of chairs of this era. Rare Native Carved Tropical Ebonized Mahogany Estate Sculptures
The origin of these masterfully carved native sculptures has been a debate from before our family acquired them 50 years ago. Certainly they are of a masterful artist’s hand and though not of subjects making them a pair they have traveled together for a long time. Even before our possession of them in a noteworthy Western New York estate. Oh the opinions that have flowed regarding their unique countenances- their overshadowing foreheads. Elongated noses, grandly puckered lips, and lovely rounded and notched ears. The eyes, masked somberly and with extreme prudence, strike awe with a mystique that makes one wonder why they cause such great feeling. One authority with an opinion told one of our elders decades ago that they were banana head effigies to keep evil spirits from damaging banana plantations on which so many people depended. This ... morerelative cannot recall any more information issued from that time but it makes us curious about the open plate at the top of the headdress which appears to be a place in which an offering would be placed. Some believe these offering plates resemble bananas. Conjecture and family discussion drew half of us in another direction because the objects in the bowls on their heads can also be seen as hands. We wish we had been more research prone during our time of enjoying them but it was simply a family love affair; we all had deep feelings about these two wonderful pieces of art. This is a truly fabulous and incredibly ornate ebonized etagere from the 1800's. Circa 1890. It has numerous original beveled glass mirrors, loads of niches for your special treasures and a surprisingly abundant amount of storage space: two spacious storage cabinets with extra shelf(one on each end) a very spacious bowfront center cabinet with extra shelf, and a full length shelf along the bottom of the unit. There are two dovetail drawers with lovely ornate handles. Four beveled mirrors, lovely graceful French legs, and did I mention that it is incredibly ornate! Everywhere you look, there are beautiful carvings, filigrees, etc! Since it is dark brown to black, the pictures cannot possibly do it justice. I am pleased to present here for auction this fabulous large 19c Anglo Indian stationary work box which is relief carved in ebonized hardwood along with a beautiful sandalwood fitted interior all in pristine quality condition. This large and impressive work box was produced in India during the British occupation around the c1860s to the c1870s and was purchased most likely by one of the British military to bring or send back home as this is definitely not an average box picked up at one of the outside bazaars but a possibly one that was special ordered. This large and impressive box has been saturated completely to the outside with relief carving depicting continuous archways. Wide point on point boarders, floral and leaf designs and the top has been done in a wonderful design of the same but with a slightly raised section and a central roundel ... morewith a large open flower head with yet more floral designs inside the large leaves and center area. The construction is of the highest order with the inside showing thick hardwood slabs used for all four sides and top using wide sturdy inlaid corner brackets for strength along with three heavy duty brass hinges and a lid prop for each side. The lock assembly is also large and heavy duty and is in fine working condition with its original fancy key. The total interior and all appointments are of high quality solid panels of sandalwood with nicely treated edges with the interior lid having a letter storage area along with a lift out organized tray, then the bottom is once again lined with high quality sandalwood. Condition is as good as it gets with very little surface wear having all brass hardware in fine working condition with the heavy lid closing tight and square locking perfectly making this Anglo Indian'CEYLONESE' box a real keeper. Probably crafted in France during the first quarter of the 20th Century. They are elegant and crisply executed, resting over a triangular brass base on a stepped patinated bronze base. They are dressed in anthemion and acanthus styled forms over the knees, along the legs and hanging along the apron. The shelf measures about 11+1/2" X 6" The wood is about 3/8" thick. It is hand carved with gold paint applied to the carving and accented with black. It is in very good original condition with a few scratches on the shelf and some of the black accent painting is just a little lighter or duller in a few spots. For sale is a set of 4 ebonized antique piano legs from a Knabe square grand piano. Circa 1880. These legs are substantial in size, measuring 23 inches in height. A photo with a one gallon jug is included for scale. Two legs have noteworthy damage, one with the scroll broken off and the other has part of the base broken off(very common with these legs) Pictures of both are included. They are in good overall condition. But these are over 130 years old, so there are plenty of nicks or blemishes. I have touched up the legs by applying several over coats of dye, and sealed with a coat of shellac. Most piano legs were attached with a large threaded dowel. These legs were fitted with heavy plates that interlock. If you have no need for the hardware let me know, do not pay until I send an invoice. The hardware weighs 22lbs for the set of 4. Family of Hand Carved Elephants Here we have for auction a delightful little family of hand carved elephants. In either ebony, or a similar dark wood, with tusks and eyes made of ox bone and with the largest elephant's toe nails also of ox bone. They are a lovely family set. And although we are not sure of their precise age, these sorts of ebony and ebonized carved figures were popular in the 1930s and 1940s, with travellers visiting India. They have been very well hand carved- the largest piece has the most intricate carving- its trunk, legs and back are carved and its ears are beautifully detailed. I don't pick up too many of these deepwells unless they are unusually nice. This is one of those frames. An outstanding c1860 walnut deepwell with multipart frame construction producing a 4 layer deep frame. This one has an outer walnut frame. A brightly gilded inner frame followed by an incised, ebonized molding and a brightly gilded incised site liner. The frame is in fantastic condition with only minor wear and has the original wavy glass and shingle backboard. Mitered corners with square nailed construction. This is the piano bench we got at Steinway Hall in NY City when we bought our 1098 upright in 1983. This is the economy bench which Steinway paired up with they're uprights. It is it good condition.Wife used it with the 1098 untill about 1987 when we got the B. After that I used it to sit& practice guitar. We always had the seat covered with a cloth so the fabric is not worn or dirty. There are little nicks on the bench.I had touched them up in the past and recently but they show when looking close. Though build is light fare it is put together well enough to still be sturdy. I believe it is ebonized maple. 34"L X 15 1/2" D X 20"H. The condition is quite good but it is an economy bench and really is not suited to sitting 3+ hours at a time for practice. Max 1 1/2-2 hrs.Id say.
