The straps would have buckled at the opening. You can see the leather strap retainers that are still in place. If you want, you can have someone who works leather to make these belt-like straps for you. The top is studded. This is quite unusual in that I've never seen it before myself. It no doubt gave the top some protection from other trunks that would have been stacked on top. I think it is quite a good look. The hardware on the front. Specifically the latches are quite ornate and show that this trunk was made back toward the Victorian era when everything was onamental in design. I figure this trunk was made in the early part of the 20th century and spent a lot of time on railroads and maybe steam ships(the labels certainly bear out the railroad part) Notice the heavy use of studded rivets all along the corner protectors. This shows the quality of the trunk and like the studded top. Improves the overall look. The lock was made by Eagle Lock(see condition note below) I suspect from this that the trunk is American in origin(no makers mark was found on it) Underneath a

Original metal handles either side. The lock is present but there is no key. Overall good condition and ready for use in the home. This is a metal trunk. The original owner called it a War Trunk. He said it was from WW1 era, I can not confirm. It is painted with a wood effect and is beautifully aged in a Shabby chic way. The inside is blue. Some of the paint has been worn off, but it all adds to its character, would look great as a coffee table or side table etc. I researched this trunk and the only others like this I could find were for sale in Europe. ANTIQUE INLAID WOOD COFFEE/SERVING TABLE WITH REMOVABLE SERVING TRAYS
DESCRIPTION This beautiful antique table was referred to as a serving table back then. However it is a coffee table in both appearance and size by todays standards. It has two built in recessed and inlaid wood circles in which the two glass and ornately carved wood trays fit into. The trays lift right off of the table by the handle openings that are on each side of each trays frame. Food from the kitchen can be placed on the trays and the trays placed back on the table. The trays also rotate or turn much like a lazy Susan although they turn manually. They do not have rotating hardware but they turn and rotate easily. The two inset circles on the table are inlaid with a flower design in varied woods. The inlaid wood in the circles are cut in pie shaped pieces and have varied grains that are inlaid diagonally. The table measures 17.5" ... morehigh with the trays on and 16" high without the trays. It is 39" long and 21" wide. Each tray measures 18.5" across the top. This table is in very good original condition although it has some peeling and dryness in an area on the very front top surface(best seen in photo#4) That area could use a coat of stain. On the trim right in front of that area there are a few dings that could also use some attention but all in all the table is magnificent. Please view all 11 photos. I have additional photos as well if you would like to see more. The table is available for pick up at my home which right outside of Philadelphia or we can arrange for freight transport. This is an old coffee table made from six. Antique sewing machine drawers. Nice hardware on the drawer/ boxes. Which were made with dove-tail precision. Don't know how old this table is. But it appears as though the sewing machine boxes are much older than the table itself. Some scratches and minor scuff marks on table top(see pics) Consistent with a table of this age. Up for sale is this beautiful restored antique victorian flat top low profile steamer trunk with working key. It measures 34 1/2" long by 20" wide and 12 1/2" tall. The original canvas that wrapped this trunk has been removed and the wood was sanded. Stained with minwax"cherry" then sealed with two coats of spar urethane(light sand in between coats) The interior lining has been removed and the wood was sanded then stained. The Trunk shows obvious aesthetic signs of age but these details give it the perfect patina and look. The structure of this trunk is solid and it is very functional as a coffee table, blanket chest, etc. A great piece with tons of character that will be the focal point of any room.
