Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more common

This is a fairly light weight ring, more like a contemporary ring than the thick and lumpy rings often produced during the early years of the Roman Empire. It is a very handsome and complex design, and probably was a very significant personal possession of whomsoever originally owned the ring. As you can see(with some difficulty, but look particularly at the middle of the bracelet and one end) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series chevrons(V” engraved into the top surface of the bracelet, done in such a manner that the point of the inverted“V” is at the very apex of the slightly crowned band, so one arm of the“V” drops to either side of the band. It was when created a fairly sophisticated and surely costly bracelet. The bracelet was not recovered entirely intact, as you can see, but originally it would have been of a reasonable good size considering the slight build of ancient Romans(the ancient population tended to be considerably smaller than contemporary populations) Originally the two ends of the bracelet would have come close to meeting one another. However the trailing ends of each side by their nature were quite thin and fairly fragile, and susceptible to loss through either breakage or corrosion. These are often thought to be an"Opium ... moreScale" This may have been true in China, but Japan did not have an opium problem. There this was a general purpose scale(Called a"Hakari" most commonly used for small expensive items in Japan like gold, make up or when buying tobacco. We've managed to demonstrate how it is used with a very light Japanese 1945 aluminum 10 sen coin. Photos# 4- 8) The item to be weighed is placed in the pan. The pivot is held in the hand or hung like this one and then the weight is slid down the shaft until they horizontally balance. The person measuring would then read the measurement on the stick where the weight is hanging and that would be the accurate measurement. This was before Japan was metric. The measurements are in"Mom'me" One Mom'me is equal to 3.75 grams. This is actually a very ingenious idea and it was used all through Asia up to the early 1900's. The shaft is ox bone. There are very tiny marks cut into it at regularly spaced intervals for the measurements. The pan is made of horn. There is some damage to the outside of the pan. See photo# 3.There is a sticker on the top of the wood case. This shows that the weights have been calibrated. They were checked every so often and if the weights were inaccurate they were confiscated and the owner had to pay a fine and for the repair of the weights.
