FORVM Roman Limestone Amphora-Shaped Scale Weight 2nd-3rd Cent AD CHOICE
Roman. Limestone Amphora-Shaped Statera(Steelyard) Scale Weight, 2nd- 3rd Century A.D. We are pleased to offer Alex G. Malloy's personal collection of Roman antiquities. Mr. Malloy. Now retired but consulting for Forum, was a dealer in antiquities for 40 years. We hope you find a few nice pieces here to enhance your collection. From the collection of Alex G. Malloy. Former dealer in antiquities for 40 years. The statera is a type of Roman scale. Often called a Roman steelyard. The steelyard comprises a balance beam which is suspended from a pivot(or fulcrum) which is very close to one end of the beam. The two parts of the beam which flank the pivot are the arms. The arm from which the object to be weighed is hung is short and is located close to the pivot point. The other arm is longer, is graduated and incorporates a counterweight which ... morecan be moved along the arm until the two arms are balanced about the pivot, at which time the weight of the load is indicated by the position of the counterweight. AI36107. Statera weight; 4 inches high; carved amphora-shaped weight with two side lug handles; long narrow ridges to pointed bottom; condition: Choice; most unusual. $431, FORVM DOES NOT HAGGLE. Rare Roman Mithras Celestial Bull Brooch 2nd - 3rd Century AD
On offer is great looking Roman zoomorphic plate brooch. In the form of a strutting bull. It is missing the tips of his legs and the pin, but apart from that it is largely intact with traces of enamel in the cells. This brooch is almost certainly associated with the Roman cult of Mithras, representing the astral bull. If so this rare 2nd century brooch would have belonged to an early initiate, to enable other's to recognise him as such. Similar to how early Christian wore the fish symbol. A great and original Roman brooch. CULTURE: Roman SIZE: 38mm x 27mm WEIGHT: 4.9g DATE: 2nd Century AD MATERIAL: Bronze This brooch is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described. A SUPERB GENUINE ROMAN Æ FIBULA - circa 2nd/3rd century AD
A genuine Roman bronze fibula. The artefact has been expertly cleaned to reveal it's original lustre. The underside of the artefact has not been cleaned. And retains some of it's original patina. This patina cannot be faked and attests to the artefacts authenticity. This is a genuine Roman artefact See picture for condition. Low start- No reserve Date: circa 2nd/3rd century AD Size: length apx 49mm Investing in Ancient Artefacts. Ancient artefacts are finite. Less are being discovered as time passes, and of course at some point in the future there will be no more. The quantity and availability of these ancient historic pieces is ever decreasing as collectors and museums purchase these objects and take them permanently off the market. Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of course there are few of us who can afford to ... morebid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum of ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history. In Rome. According to the legend, this choice was due to the fact that Romulus, the founder of Rome, first saw an Eagle, when he was competing with his brother Remus for who should be the founder of the new town. The Roman Eagle was usually represented with open wings and it was often inscribed within an oak-wreath This beautiful Eagle seal ring would have represented a symbol of power and independence One of the best original examples Please see photos for exact condition Box is f

Superb Roman Silver Lunar Moon Amulet - Sacred to Diana c. 2nd - 3rd Century AD
click images for enlargement We offer this charming Roman period silver lunar amulet. Dating to the 2nd- 3rd century AD. Of the classic crescent moon shape, associated with Diana(Artemis goddess of the moon and the hunt) These amulets were worn to invoke the protection of the goddess, to associate their wearer with Diana and the cycles of the moon. Very popular throughout the Celtic Greek and Roman world, often having specific meaning to each culture. The use of such amulets continued into the 10th- 11th century, before finally being subdued by Christianization. This example is a rather nice and simple piece, having an undecorated lunar and a simple securing loop. It is suitable for modern day wear if one so chooses, having survived the ravages of time extremely well. ROMAN BRONZE HERM- 2nd or 3rd Century AD - RARE - Bargain Priced EX-HARLAN BERK
ROMAN BRONZE HERM, 2ND TO 3RD CENTURY AD Ex-Harlan J. Berk and Co. RARE. ESPECIALLY AT THIS PRICE PLEASE NOTE: Because Ebay displays descriptions on another website nowadays. The internal links below only work if you right-click on one, such as"About the Item, and then select"Open in New Tab. About the Photos: Well. These non-coin antiquities are easier to photograph than ancient coins, but they're not always that easy to photograph. And this amazing work of very old Roman bronze is a good example of the kind of photo I've been having trouble with lately. The headliner photo is pretty good. But I barely managed, with the somewhat primitive camera setup I used, to keep it all in focus; unfortunately, the headliner photo came out a bit fuzzy, but for this 2014 listing, I was able to edit it into a new version that manages ... moreto come very close to how this lovely little herm really looks in hand. The second photo. The four-plex, is composed of four views from photographs originally provided by the good folks at Harlan J. Berk& Company when i bought this wonderful little antiquity, about ten years ago. Unfortunately, Berk's photos leave a few things to be desired for accuracy. For one thing, for some reason they don't show the little display stand the herm is currently mounted upon, which you can see in my headliner photo. I consider that an important part of the item(but, if the winning bidder wants to remove the stand, that of course could be done easily enough. For another thing. The Berk photos just aren't quite as sharp for detail as I would like. Pretty close, but not quite there- then again, it's really tough to capture the clarity of detail one would really like when photographing any small object, as you surely know if you've tried it. But worse than that. The tone in the Berk photos is just plain wrong, and these contain a few little"photo artifacts" that just don't belong there: in hand, the background tone, the bare metal itself, is(under normal to brig
