FORVM Roman Greece Barbotine Ware 5 1/2" Amphora 2nd Cent AD RARE
Roman Greece. Barbotine Ware Amphora, 2nd Century A.D. We are pleased to offer Alex G. Malloy's personal collection of Roman antiquities. Mr. Malloy. Now retired but consulting for Forum, was a dealer in antiquities for 40 years. We hope you find a few nice pieces here to enhance your collection. From the collection of Alex G. Malloy. Former dealer in antiquities for 40 years. Barbotine is French for a ceramic slip. A mixture of clay and water used for decorating pottery. In English the term is used for two different techniques but here we are only concerned with the technique used in the ancient world. Barbotine is piped onto the object much like cakes are decorated with icing, using a quill, horn, or another kind of nozzle. The slip is often a color contrasting with rest of the vessel and forms a design, a pattern, or inscription, that ... moreis raised above the main surface. The Egyptians used barbotine decorative designs. Specimens have also been found at Minoan Knossos on the island of Crete. This example was found near Corinth. The style is certainly related to the Egyptian Barbotine ware but it may have been made in mainland Greece. AY36060. references: Barbotine ware amphora. Ancient Very Rare Roman Snake Cuff Bronze Bracelet 100 BC-200 AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About This Bracelet This very rare ancient Roman bracelet is incredibly smooth all over. Is fully intact and is a solid and weighty adornment. It boasts the most precious snake head on one end and not to mention its incredibly vibrant golden-hued bronze all over. The serpent, or snake, is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. In ancient Rome the snake was a creature sacred to Apollo. There were snakes in use in various Seer Temples in ancient Greece and the early Roman Empire. The snake, in pre-Christian cultures, often represented eternal life, as the snake sheds its skins regularly, and keeps growing and surviving. This bracelet would have been given to a child for her safe-keeping and blessings throughout her life. Ancient Roman Bronze Large Tweezers – Rare! 100 - 200 AD
About The Romans The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings around the Mediterranean in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been destabilized through a series of civil wars. Several events marked the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium and the granting of the honorific Augustus to Octavian by the Roman Senate. After the collapse of central government in the West in the 5th century, the eastern half of the Roman Empire continued as what would later be known as the Byzantine Empire. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance. The institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. Ancient Extreme Rare Roman Silver Ring with Phallic Symbol 100BC – 100 AD
About This Ring This very rare item of antiquity is a silver ring bearing the infamous phallic symbol so often associated with ancient Rome. Its band is elegant and bears a small cut at the middle of its base as a result of excessive ancient use and being buried for 2.000 years! It still remains an incredibly strong and comfortable wear today. Its bezel is in the form of a phallus. Such rare inclusions are increasingly hard to obtain and are in high demand. In ancient Roman religion and magic. The fascinus or fascinum was the embodiment of the divine phallus. The word can refer to the deity himself(Fascinus) to phallus effigies and amulets, and to the spells used to invoke his divine protection. Pliny calls it a medicus invidiae, a"doctor" or remedy for envy(invidia, a"looking upon" or the evil eye. Phallic charms were ... moreubiquitous in Roman culture. From jewelry to bells and wind chimes to lamps. The fascinus was thought particularly to ward off evil from children, mainly boys, and from conquering generals. Pliny notes the custom of hanging a phallic charm on a baby's neck, and examples have been found of phallus-bearing rings too small to be worn except by children. The"fist and phallus" amulet or ring was prevalent amongst soldiers. Phallic amulets were often depicted with a representation of a(usually) clenched fist at the bottom of the shaft. Facing away from the glans. Several examples show the fist making the manus fica or"fig sign" a symbol of good luck. An excessively rare genuine Vikingr bronze wolf-cross amulet/pendant. This type of artefact is thought to be an example of religious syncretism. The blending or incorporation of two or more religious beliefs from unrelated traditions, as is argued about the famous wolf-cross/hammer found in Foss Iceland, and is on display in the museum of Iceland. Date: circa 10th century AD Size: length apx 31mm Investing in Ancient Artefacts. Ancient artefacts are finite. Less are being discovered as time passes, and of course at some point in the future there will be no more. The quantity and availability of these ancient historic pieces is ever decreasing as collectors and museums purchase these objects and take them permanently off the market. Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of course there are few of us who can afford to bid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum of ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history.
