SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Outside Height: 82 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Outside Diameter: 131 millimeters(5 1/4 inches) Inside Height: 35 millimeters(1 3/8 inches) Inside Diameter: 114 millimeters(4 5/8 inches) Height: Inside: 35 millimeters(1 3/8 inch) Lid: 41 millimeters(1 2/3 inches) Base: 46 millimeters(1 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Entirely intact. A little wear consistent with any household item which is over a century in age. A few minute blemishes typical of handcrafted ancient porcelain of the era– almost indiscernible. Not flawless, but certainly in an excellent state of preservation. DETAIL: A nicely preserved very cute little cosmetic case or jewelry box done in the traditional blue and white porcelain so wonderfully characteristic of late Ming/early Qing Dynasty artwork. The glaze is entirely intact. Vibrant cobalt blue, and the condition of the case is exceptionally good. There are of course a few minor scuffs, marks, dings, etc. As well there are the little blemishes so typical of handcrafted porcelain of the Qing and Ming Dynasties; warts, dimples, pimples and pits; but hardly noticeable except with critical scrutiny. All of the preceding almost unnoticeable and very minor, we’re just playing critic here in the interest of full disclosure. The depiction on the outside on the top of the lid is of three men in an idyllic park setting This is as close to as good as one can reasonably expect of a porcelain box somewhere between one and two centuries old. While it’s not perfect. It is about as close to it as you will ordinarily find of an authentic porcelain box like this, and there are no repairs. Of course realist

Somewhere in the dim mists of ancient Chinese mythology. The dragon came to represent male virtues; and the female counterpart, the“dragon’s bride” came to be the phoenix bird. This theme of dragon and dragon’s bride, or phoenix bird, became an extremely popular motif during the Ming Dynasty(14th-17th century) especially in decorative arts such as porcelain vases, bowls, etc. This very large wall plaque continues this theme, with a very handsome and clear depiction of the a classic mythological ancient Chinese dragon. The dragon symbolizes the Chinese people and the people from Chinese origin considered themselves. With a certain amount of pride, descendants from the dragon" According to legend, this ancestral dragon was a creature with a deer's antlers, a camel's head, the eyes of a hare, the neck of a serpent, the teeth of a crocodile, claws of an eagle, paws like a tiger, and the ears of a buffalo. CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Jar/Vase. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Zhou Dynasty. Spring and Autumn Period(770 to 476 B.C. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 140 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) at bowl; 94 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at top lip. Height: 98 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. As well there is an assortment of tiny scuffs and abrasions which one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. Considering that the typical such specimen is recovered shattered into shards, this specimen is truly in remarkable condition. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative

Acclaimed both by critics as well as the general public– the story of one of the most significant finds ever of Paleoanthropology. 409 pages. The book reveals the controversial change Lucy makes in our view of human origins, and provides a vivid, behind-the-scenes account of the entire history of paleoanthropology; as well as the eccentric, colorful characters who are and were a part of it. In January 1979. Johanson’s startling“official” announcement of his discovery of Lucy(which is how the world knows her, from the Beatle’s song“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” even though her scientific name is Australopithecus afarensis) was an event that captured headlines, catapulted a young, relatively unknown American paleoanthropologist into international acclaim, and created a spirited, ongoing controversy among experts; including most notably Mary and Richard Leakey, in this wonderfully enigmatic field of fierce rivalries and astonishing breakthroughs. Wonderful Ancient Roman Red Jasper Intaglio of Mercury Hermes 2nd Century AD
On offer is this superb red jasper intaglio depicting the god Hermes(Mercury) who was the messanger of the gods. He is shown in the classic pose of holding a money purse and caduceus wand in the other. The beautiful deep red colour of jasper was particularly fashionable in silver intaglio rings from the late 1st century AD. The subject of Mercury was very popular with merchants and businessmen(since by wearing his image one would be invoking the powers of the god to the wearer) This intaglio would date to the 2nd century AD. The black marks on the reverse are natural striations in the stone and not a crack. This intaglio was part of a collection we recently purchased(that had been removed from a Georgian frame by the previous owners father) The original collection consisted of around forty intaglios, likely put together by an antiquiarian ... moregentleman. During the 17th- 18th century collecting ancient intaglios and cameos was a very fashionable hobby of the aristocracy and royalty. Intaglios were used to seal private documents. Also for transactions of trade and business. This intaglio depicts the classic symbol for trust, trade and friendship. It is an excellent example, in superb condition with no damage or restoration. The intaglio stone is suitable for remounting into a gold finger ring and can still be worn today! 2nd Century Roman Era Zoomorphic Occult Two-Headed Serpant
Culture: Romano European: Northern France Date: Circa: 2nd Century AD Size and weight: UK Ring Size: T1.2: US Ring Size: 10 and 9.5 grams Description: Rare Romano European Coiled Serpent Ring. The ring has been created in lead with a high tin content and is rare to survive in this fine condition. Lead rings are known in the Roman era(See note below) and lead was a valued and sort-after material. The ring has an oval band which splits into three seperate strands. Each strand is then cast as a serpent with two heads formed and a tail seen. The ring has a developed lead patina with good calcite deposits also seen to the metal surfaces. By 160. The worship of Glycon had undoubtedly spread beyond the Aegean. An inscription from Antioch of that date records a slogan, Glycon protect us from the plague-cloud" that is consistent with the description ... morewe have from Lucian. Also in that year the governor of Asia, Publius Mummius Sisenna Rutilianus, declared himself protector of Glycon's oracle. The governor later married Alexander's daughter. According to Lucian. Another Roman governor, of Cappadocia, was led by Glycon's oracle to his death in Armenia. And even the Emperor himself was not immune to the cult: Marcus Aurelius sought prophesies from Alexander and his snake god. Meanwhile, Abonutichus, a small fishing village before the arrival of the cult, became an important town and accepted another name, Ionopolis. It is uncertain what role the popularity of Glycon played in the rise of the city. In short order Glycon worship was found throughout the vast area between the Danube and Euphrates. Beginning late in the reign of Antoninus Pius and continuing into the 3rd century. Official Roman coins were struck in honor of Glycon, attesting his popularity. While the cult gradually lost followers after the death of its leader in c.170, it survived for at least a hundred years thereafter, with Alexander being incorporated into its mythology as a grandson of Asclepius. Some evidence indicates the cult survived into
Superb Ancient Romano Egyptian Banded Agate Intaglio of Serapis 2nd Century AD
On offer is superb Roman Egyptian banded agate intaglio of Serapis. Dating to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The intaglio is cut through a natural white layer of agate, into the orange carnelian agate beow to give depth and dimension. Once the impression was made in wax, the head stands proud in cameo form. The intaglio depicts the head of Serapis, in my opinion modelled in the guise of Emperor Caracalla(198- 217 AD) Serapis is depicted wearing a modius on his head, a classic attribute of this Graeco-Egyptian god who during the Roman period was used in Egypt in place of Jupiter. Emperor's being divine and worshipped as such, often portrayed themselves in the guise of various gods, Jupiter, Serapis and Hercules being favourites. This ringstone was likely originally mounted within a gold signet ring, worn by an administrator or goveneor, working ... morein Alexandria or another part of Roman Egypt. It is unlikely a military intaglio, with portraits of the gods and emperors being used mainly by priests and civil servants. Rare Roman Mithras Celestial Bull Brooch 2nd - 3rd Century AD
On offer is great looking Roman zoomorphic plate brooch. In the form of a strutting bull. It is missing the tips of his legs and the pin, but apart from that it is largely intact with traces of enamel in the cells. This brooch is almost certainly associated with the Roman cult of Mithras, representing the astral bull. If so this rare 2nd century brooch would have belonged to an early initiate, to enable other's to recognise him as such. Similar to how early Christian wore the fish symbol. Less are being discovered as time passes, and of course at some point in the future there will be no more. The quantity and availability of these ancient historic pieces is ever decreasing as collectors and museums purchase these objects and take them permanently off the market. Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of course there are few of us who ... morecan afford to bid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum of ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history. Rare Ancient Roman Silver Gilt Ring Haunting Bezel Subject 2nd - 5th Century
Genuine and original fully conserved European Roman Era(3rd- 5th Century) copper alloy and Silvered ring. This ring is a bit of a mystery to me. It came within a larger collection of Roman material. However its nature or attributed deity is unknown. The bezel subject appears to me to show a stylized skull mask perhaps a death mask however, this is open to interpretation. The ring may have association with the Mithras Cult however; again this is by no way clear as that cult was largely associated with Sun God Sol and the Sacrificial Bull. The ring is of base metal core which has then been silvered. Three slight scratches on side- very unusual and haunting bezel design. Good patination details seen throughout particularly to the reverse- UK size V1/2. Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of course there are few of us who can afford to ... morebid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum of ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history.
