Publisher: Shire Egyptology; 1995) The ancient Egyptians believed that the statutory agricultural labor imposed on them in order to utilize the Nile floods would continue in the afterlife. To avoid this irksome duty they devised the shabti. A figurine which they hoped would deputize for them on being activated by the appropriate magic spell. If the idea smacks of'draft-dodging' the figures are nevertheless of considerable artistic interest, and provide information about Egyptian religion, society, personal names, titles, etc. The iconography, inscriptions, materials and manufacture are described with criteria for identifying and dating the various types. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 5 1/2(U.S. Diameter: 18mm(outer dimensions excluding gemstone) 16 1/2mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 8mm(breadth) 8 1/2mm(height) 1 1/2mm(thickness) Excluding gemstone. Completely intact. Heavy wear consistent with sustained(ancient) usage, very light(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A handsome. Nicely constructed Roman bronze ring with a raised platform, six-sided bezel which at one time would have been engraved. However the ring was worn for such an extended period of time that though the ring is entirely intact and its integrity undiminished, nonetheless whatever engraved design it once bore was worn smooth. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime, as it would take most of a life time to wear an engraved bezel smooth. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. Though the ring was not originally produced to hold a gemstone. The large, flat bezel seemed to invite a gemstone. So we mounted a large, natural, antique, handcrafted Siberian Unakite semi-precious gemstone using jeweler’s epoxy. The gemstone is quite secure, but if you at time in the future wished to remove it, this could

Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of course there are few of us who can afford to ... morebid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum of ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history. A ring bearing such an image is often associated with marriage rings at this date, though could well have been used to seal documents by a merchant or such like.
