She was a very fast topsail schooner working out of the port of Galveston Texas. At the turn out the Century she was making several voyages a year between Galveston and the ancient Jewish port of Jaffa which at the time was still under the Ottaman empire. Her main cargo was hemp used to make ropes for the rigging of ships. The Baltimore Clippers were topsail schooners or brigs with raked masts and sharp deep hulls that allowed them to sail close to the wind. They were orginally used as slavers and light cargo vessels. But their speed made them ideal privaters. In the War of 1812, sailing under Letters of Marque the Chasseur commanded by Captain Thomas Boyle captured 45 British merchant ships. The Chasseur was later nicknamed the"Pride of Baltimore" and a replica of her sails today and can be seen in Baltimore. The model measures 35" long from bow to stern. Circa 1820. And originating in New York this mirror is fresh to the market. This mirror was purchased in 1984 from a antique store in Philadelphia as were numerous other pieces that this client is going to consign to us. This beautiful mirror with beautiful water gilding that has been used to cover the eagle and the decorative foilage has a melted appearance to it. The eagle is carved of wood and with a layer of gezo and the water gild applied as the finish. The primary wood of this mirror is mahogany with pine as the secondary. This mirror does retain the oirignal mirror. This American Federal mirror measures 59" in width. 39 1/2" in height. The eagle measures 23" in width, 11" in height on the plinth. Condition The overall condition of this mirror is excellent. There are losses to the water gild. On the lower right corner of the mirror there is about 3/4" of the molding missing(see picture) The overall condition of the eagle is. 8 1/2 out of 10. There is shrinkage to the gesso on the back of the eagle as well as on the garland and leaves. The back of the mirror is pristine with the original panels with great oxidation.
