Vandermaelen presents a fascinating commentary on the geography and geology of Mexico by none other than Alexander von Humboldt. The map was created for his monumental Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which ... moreassembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. This vintage 1855 map of the West Indies and Bermuda Islands was made by famous map makers Colton's. It is in fair condition consistent with being more than 150 years old. The map was folded up in a snall hardback book which unfolded into the full size map. There are some slits and age spots at some of the fold lines. The book spine is separated but front and back of book is included. This is a beautiful map and would even be outstanding framed.

Bradley, 415 Dearborn Street, Chicago. This is a Grand New Census and World's Fair Edition. Maps are full color- very attractive and interesting! This map has 4 full pages; center 2 pages are Chile, Argentine Confederation and Uruguay(scale 1 inch equals about 108 miles) On the flip side of one page is Peru(no scale given) and on the flip side of the other page is Cuba and the Bahama Islands(scale 1 inch equals about 95 miles) Pages are large, being either 14 1/2" x 10 ... more3/4" or 11 5/8 x 14 1/2" with viewing area being approximately 12” x 9” a little more or a little less) on most of the maps. Each map has at least one edge that is not 100% razor straight where it was taken out of the binding mounted in the atlas. The larger pages have tiny perforations(see picture) along the binding edge where it was bound with cord. All pages are slightly yellowed from age but map colors are bright and clear. Maps may have small dog-eared corners or tiny pieces of corners missing. See individual pictures. These pages have some smudges and rust spots, mostly in the margins; except the Peru side has some rusty areas mostly in the ocean area. Every map has an atlas page number in one margin. Original, steel-engraved map of the Caribbean- the Antilles or West-India Islands, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Centered on the island of Hispaniola(Santo Domingo) It covers the Caribbean from southern Florida, south as far as the Gulf of Panama and the Spanish Main, and east to Barbados and the Lesser Antilles. The Bahamas(Bahama Islands) parts of Honduras, the Panama Bay, Guatemala and Nicaragua are also included. The map identifies the Island of Guanhani or Cat Island, in the Bahamas where'Colon or Columbus first landed 12 Oct, 1492' This map also marks the famous battle between Admiral John Benbow and the French buccaneer Jean du Casse during the Action of 1702, where Benbow's captains refused to support his actions ... moreallowing du Casse to escape. Benbow later imprisoned the mutinous captains. His actions contributed to his notoriety and several references in popular culture followed. Most famous among them can be found in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Hall also identifies the site off the southern shore of Santo Domingo where Sir John Duckworth defeated the remainder of the French fleet following the Battle of Trafalgar in 1806. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ this type of border, it is possibly the earliest to use it on such a large scale. Both the choice to use steel plate engraving and the addition of the attractive keyboard boarder are evolutions of anti-forgery efforts. Copper
