Many of the maps are based on maps that first appeared in Richard Andree's Algemeiner Hand-Atlas(Leipzig. 1880s) which is considered one of the most visually pleasing atlases from the late 19th century. The maps are finely detailed and the printing is sharp and crisp with no off-setting. The paper is heavy and still quite bright, with only minor even age-toning to the extremes of the margins.

The carving appears to have been done with one piece of wood. This carving measures 16 and 1/4" long by 11 and 1/8" tall by 5/8" thick. It is a lovely wood carving that must have taken an extremely long time to carve. I presume that this was once an item that one could purchase when visiting the country. 1757 Decorative Bellin Map of Haiti, San Domingo, Cuba
1757 Bellin Map- Carte de L'Isle d'Hayti. Ou L'Isle de Saint Domingue J.N. Bellin was one of the most successful cartographers of all time. As the the French Navy's hydrographer and chartmaker he had access to the finest information available to any mapmaker and used this to publish a large variety of atlases including'Petit Atlas Maritime' as well as his contribution to L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' This fine map of the island of Santo Domingo. Now divided betwen Haiti and the Dominican Republic, comes from the latter work, a 1757 French edition. The map also includes parts of Cuba and Jamaica. And Puerto Rico. There is a large decorative title cartouche. The map measures 8.5" by 13" with several folds(as issued) Has later outline hand colouring, and is in fairly good condition ... morewith a 2" tear at the right margin and border which has been repaired on the reverse, some creasing along the folds, and light browning of the paper. This is just a cool souvenir I picked up with I was in the military. It is 10" long and about 4 1/4" tall from the bottom to the tip of the tree. It came with the flag. But is also great as a desk piece for holding a pencil or something. It seems to be made of two different types of wood. But I do not know which types they are. The Haiti piece is glued to ... morethe base, and you can see some of the glue in the back. The flag has a 10 7/8" long stick. And the flag itself measures 6" by 4" There really isn't anything wrong with this piece. It has a natural flaw in the corner of the wood in the back. And maybe some slight wear.
