The map has a copyright date by Desliver of 1856 in small print in the bottom margin. Desilver's name and address 251 Market St. Philladelphia appears under the title area. The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some minor changes particularly ... morein the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Bonus Map of Mexico: I am also including a bonus map of Mexico that has a very bad tear across it with some paper loss. Although there are some small insets that could be framed up or of interest. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 by 15 1/2 inches on a 13 3/4 by 17" page. From Nicaragua to Panama, with two vignette views, printed more than 162 years ago. This map delineates the proposed railway across the Isthmus of Panama. This railroad was opened in 1855. Four years after this map was printed, providing the infrastructure that would determine the location of the future canal, which began construction in 1880. The map also shows a proposed road across Veragua from Lake Chiriqui to the Pacific Ocean at Bágala. And it locates the proposed canal connecting Lake Nicaragua with Greytown via the Mosquito and San Juan Rivers. A handsome vignette at the upper right shows the fort at Chagre. In the lower left.
