This finely engraved original antique map a battle plan of the Siege of Douay(Douai) in Northern France- during the 1704-13 Spanish War of Succession- was published in 1745 by Nicholas Tindal in"T indal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England" A large and very fine battle plan showing both siege and works against this fortified city ... moreof Douai and the detailed dispositions and battle lines of Lord Marlborough's army against the French attempt to lift the siege in June 1710. This siege taking place during the Spanish War of Succession in which Spain lost many possessions both in Europe and the New World. Paul Rapin de Thoiras was a Frenchman responsible for publishing ten elaborate volumes on the History of England Histoire D Angleterre published between 1724-27. In 1745 his work was translated and updated by Nicholas Tindal and called Tindal s Continuation of Mr. Rapin s History of England. Included with the English edition of Rapins work was an atlas containing 45 maps. Taped to the back of the frame is the following description: Although published in 1758, the? of Louisbourg's second seige, this map details the first capture of the Dunkirk of the West in 1745. It was originally published in the Universal Magazine of May, 1758. A postscript to the accompanying article mentions rumors of another force under Admiral Boscawen having left the West Indies for Nova Scotia. This of course was the expedition which was to bring about the fall of the fortress in July, 1758. The frame is handmade of red pin, walnut-stained, hand-rubbed finish of hard Cannuba Wax. With the Greeks and the British assaulting the positions of the Bulgarian First Army near Dojran Lake. The battle was part of World War I and took place in the Balkan Theatre. The battle ended with the Bulgarians repulsing all attacks, but then retreating. On the left, the British XII Corps made up of the 22nd and 26th Divisions, reinforced by the Greek Seres division was to attack the difficult Pip Ridge. The British concentrated 231 pieces of artillery, including heavy 8 inch howitzers. The bombardment took place over two days, included gas shells and concluded with a rolling barrage behind which the infantry was to advance.
