A Map of Glocestershire from the best Authorities A large engraved map from Camden's Britannia. Dated 1805 on the map but the paper is very clearly date watermarked 1809. Measures approx 42cm x 48cm with several fold lines including one off-vertical. Visible but quite flattened out with time. Clear. Bright impression with attractive modern hand colouring; very clean. No significant foxing or browning. Plate edge visible the whole way round. Biggest condition issue is that four round holes have been punched in the top left margin for filing in the past and these have small tears, one into the map border; also a little bit of discolouration and darkening in the margins and a couple of the fold ends have small splits. The theodolite consists of a telescope(replacement) Racked semicircle supported by t he double'A' frame. Compass, horizontal circle and two bubble levels. Together mounted on a two-parallel-plate with four leveling screws. T elescope vertica l movement is by the knob on the racked semicircle. And horizontal movement is by the knob on the plate above the horizontal circle(see photo#7) Marked on the top horizontal plate' CA RY LONDON' And'Tang to 100 of Radius' Marked on the beveled edge of the plate'100, 90, 20, 10, 0, 10, 20, 90, 100' The horizontal circle is about ... more7" in diameter. And it has scale markings on the beveled edge'10, 20, 30, 350, 360' The semi-circle has scale markings on both sides: 100. 90, 80, 10, 0, 10, 20,30, 40' on one side; there are two scales on the other side'30, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1, 0, 1, 30, Diff of Hypo& Base' and'100, 90, 20, 10, 0, 10, 20, 80, 90, 100, Perp in 100 of the Base' The compass is about 3 1/2" in diameter. And it has silvered dial and double scale markings: 0-360; 0-90-0-90-0-90. The compass is working fine and it has its needle locking piece. Everything about the theodolite is great. Shame missing its original telescope. Someone did a good job in finding this replacement for it. Which makes a magnificent display! The telescope is set(not fitted) in the Y bearings above the semicircle. It has rack and pinion focusing and delivers beautiful images. It is nearly 12 1/4" long when closed, 14 1/2" when fully open, and it has an objective lens cap. The instrument stands about 12 1/4" tall. The theodolite is in good condition for its age. Very Rare Cary. Porter Ltd. Large Brass Pantograph Up for offer is a magnificent piece of history. It is a large brass pantograph made by Cary. Porter Ltd. in London. It has everything that originally came with it, the pencil, stylus, weight, and even a box of drawing leeds with three still in the box. I believe the pantograph is from the mid-late 1800s. It does appear to have been used but is still in very good condition. It has what appears to be the original line with it even. The size of the outside arms is 33.5" There are 6 ox-bone wheels. There are two adjustable and 1 stationary sleeves. Two arms have scales ranging from 1-2 to 1-12. I have not cleaned this in any way and leave it up to the buyer to decide if they want to clean it or not. What is different about this particular pantograph from the other one's I have seen is ... morethat the case actually has a spot for the box of drawing leeds. The box is not in the best of shape but would not be difficult to restore. Both sides and the back panel have splits. The box is constructed with hand cut dovetails. Up for your consideration is an antique bank safe. Manufactured in the 1890's by Cary Safe& Lock Company. The Buffalo NY based company manufactured safes and vaults for Banks from 1878 to 1929 when the company went out of business during the great depression. Cary was one of the better of the safe manufacturers of the period as all of their safes were guaranteed burglar and fireproof. The safe is in excellent working condition, and would take minimal effort to fully restore. John Cary(1754-1835) was a London based cartographer. Map and globe maker. Printed on the bottom of the map inside the engraving: London Published Jan.1 1793, by J. Cary, Engraver and Map Seller Strand. Overall condition is very good. The paper map is smoothly laid down on a paper board, the red and blue outline colours are still reasonably bright, there is a dull brown wash border around the map outline, this wash colour is also on many areas of the map. The rest of the paper looks a little dirty, probably normal ageing, no foxing. Overall size of the map is 24 cm. by 30 cm and the image size is 22 cm. by 26 cm. Up for SALE WITH A BUY IT NOW is: An outstanding Antique Reverse Painted Art Deco frame with an old paper picture of Cary Grant inside. No signs of household use with a photo& backing unopened. This frame still has the partial& peeled Manufacturers label on the front. Because this is peeled you can not read it(see close-up)but those of you who collect these vintage frames. May recognize the shape of the Company label. Unopened backing& easel looks like new. I was going to check inside. But it is so tight and obviously never opened I am leaving as found. You can see the edge of the picture of Cary Grant at an angle& I can see it is not a photo. But a paper picture that the company used when they distributed the frame back in the day, like they used to do with wallets) It measures 11" x 13 to the outside edges. Inside photo ... morearea is 8" x 10" note unusual deco cresent shape. To two corners, which will not make this entirely square with a photo inside) It has the more desirable metal corners(rather than paper) and shows minor wear in storage. Condition: You will see some age oxidation/dots to the metal corners. Although unused with photos.the family stored this lovely frame unwrapped in a box with other frames and hence 3 scratches to the exterior glass& the usual minor teeny nicks or specks of paint loss to the very edges.please see close-ups of edges for examples. I show all this in the close-ups for your review(the most prominent 1 with arrow and the very light(tilt to see) scratches are on his face around the right eye that my camera barely captured. Overall a beauty. With a very attractive& desirable Deco pattern as shown. Was born in Virginia and was the son of Archibald and Monimia(Fairfax) Cary; nephew of Confederate Navy officer Reginald Fairfax; joined the Confederate Army. 1861, and served in the 17th Virginia Infantry, and as courier to General Longstreet; participated in the battle of 1st Manassas, July, 1861; original entry into Confederate States Navy, as acting midshipman, 4th class, August 5, 1861; served on the Richmond station, 1861; then aboard the cruiser CSS Nashville, 1861- 1862; returned to Richmond, about March, 1862, on furlough; ordered to the New Orleans station, and aboard the newly launch ... moreironclad steamer CSS Mississippi, April, 1862, and, after the fall of New Orleans, aboard the receiving vessel CSS St. Philip(formerly the Star of the West) guarding the treasury specie from New Orleans, which was sent to Vicksburg.
