Archive 16 Letters Teacher Slaves South Carolina 1864 CP Noyes
Archive 16 Letters Teacher Slaves South Carolina 1864 CP Noyes 8 page letters from Catherine Noyes w/Drawing This is a fantastic archive of 16 letters from Catherine Porter Noyes a young woman who went to South Carolina in 1864 to teach freed slaves at St Helena Island. The letters are from 1864 and 1870. When she went back to continue teaching. They are a wonderful firsthand account of what was going on with the former slaves at that time. There is also a small drawing of the plantation she was on in 1864 and the surrounding area. There is great content throughout the letters as many of the letters are several pages long. A few of the letters are only partially present, but most of them are complete. Here is a small sample of what is in the letters: Presently Aunt Jane came in and told me there were some gentleman’s out there and I suppose ... moreshe wanted me to go to the door and speak to them but I did not know who they were and that I would wait for them to make themselves known but Miss Botume came downstairs and went to the door they came up and spoke to her very politely and one of them said he wanted to take the other one over the plantation and did not like to do it without permission. Which we thought was very polite. He went on to say that he was a nephew of Mr Smith who used to live here. If he said that he was a nephew of the evil one himself I should have thought it was about as good a recommendation. We were quite struck with their being so polite and pleasant though they carefully declined to step over the threshold…I think the Southern people here do feel very bitterly. I feel it a good deal in church where are a great many of them but there are a good many northerners too and I have very pleasant people to sit with…Did I tell you about William Lee? He was a man who belonged on this place and last year he was put in the penitentiary for four years for beating his wife and another woman and now the Governor has pardoned him out. I wish he had let him stay in till I had gone from him for I am afraid of
Diary 1864 Noyes Teacher Slaves St Helena South Carolina
Diary 1864 Noyes Teacher Slaves St Helena South Carolina This is a wonderful and important 20 page handwritten diary from Catherine Noyes a young woman who went to South Carolina in 1864 to teach freed slaves. The first half of the diary is from 1864 in South Carolina and the second half is from 1866 when she was back home in Massachusetts. It is in very good condition with great content throughout. It says in part, Up at 4:30. Mary and I got breakfast as Dick had not appeared and started off for Tripp Point where we were take the steamer for Beaufort. It was warm and pleasant when we started out by the time we reached the point a cold wing had sprung up… William and Mr Folsom went to Beaufort this morning so Molly and I had the school. I am teaching them how doth the little and they can nearly say the first verse. I had Archy and Rufus come ... moreand stand before me with folded arms and say it. Rufus is a very sentimental looking child and she and she and Archy carried on a great flirtation…Hope Place was remarkably pleasant today and it was a real pleasure to teach them. They insisted the name of the island they lived on was the United States and that Boston was the capital of SC… I rode up to the nigger house and inquired if Mr Allen was there and they said he had been there and had gone. I thought it was very strange and perhaps they did not know who I meant so asked for Mr William and received the same answer. I asked where had gone to and they said and I then divined that they meant Mr William Alden. I asked why the children did not come to school and found a great many of them had the small pox. They pointed out one child in the circle round me who had it…he informed me that he thought he was going to have it for he had got one bump now. I wanted to get away from them as soon as I could so said I would drive towards Mulberry Hill and meet Mr Allen… Paris came to William for an explanation of some remarks he heard I had made about his marriage. Such as saying it was not clean etc. In the PM while I was quietly

Broken South Carolina Dispensary Bottle w Palmetto Tree
This use to be a wonderful bottle but it's now only half wonderful. This is a broken dug South Carolina tall Dispensary Bottle with the Palmetto Tree and"Dispensary" under the tree. The bottle stands 6 inches tall in its broken form. This is being made available for viewers who would like the Palmetto tree dispensary bottle but can't afford the very high going price. There are air bubbles here and there and what's left of the bottle is quite solid showing no further cracks. All the edges are smooth from being encased in soil throughout the years. This is a dug bottle from South Carolina. What's left is still really nice. The image on the glass is in very good condition. It's raised quite high and the wording is in fine shape.

Coin Silver Clark South Carolina Teaspoon, circa 1840
We are pleased to present a coin silver teaspoon crafted by Clark of South Carolina. This spoon was labeled South Carolina origin when we purchased it in an antique shop in Brevard. NC. We purchased a large collection that came from a local estate. Each piece was labled and the majority of the pieces were correct with a very small number that we couldn't verify but took at face value. This is one that probably was face value. With all references available, we did not attribute this spoon to any of the northern Clark silversmiths as the hallmark did not mirror any of record. There is a monogram on the front handle that we are unable to discern for certain. It dates from circa 1840 and is in very good condition commensurate with estate silver. Map also shows roads, wooded areas, streams and high ground. In very good condition, overall size 9 1/2" X 6" Battle of Hobkirk's Hill The Battle of Hobkirk's Hill(sometimes referred to as the Second Battle of Camden) was a battle of the American Revolutionary War fought on April 25. 1781, near Camden, South Carolina. The British, led by Lieutenant Colonel Lord Francis Rawdon, defeated the Americans led by General Nathanael Greene. ... moreThe British were outnumbered 900 to Greene's 1500. This was Rawdon's first independent commanding battle. And, despite being outnumbered, he didn't want to make his first commanding battle a retreating one. He tried to attack Greene's army by surprise, but Greene made a battle strategy quickly. Rawdon countered Greene's first moves and Greene was forced to withdraw to the old battlefield of Camden when his advancing line faltered at one point in the battle. This left Rawdon in control of Hobkirk's Hill. Though Rawdon had won. He was forced to retreat to Charleston soon afterwards.
