Royal Carlock Washington DC Hand Colored Photography By Royal Hubert Carlock(1899-1970) was born in Paris Crossing. Indiana. One of six children he was born to Benjamin and Ellen Carlock. After graduating from Indiana University, Carlock married Ethel Wohrer in 1917. He entered the U.S. Army near the end of World War I where he specialized in aerial photography as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and after the War had ended, the couple moved to Washington DC in 1918 where their first daughter was born. After his discharge from the Army. Carlock secured employment with a photography firm named C.O Buckingham who at the time was producing hand-painted photographs of the chief tourist attractions in Washington. DC. This explains the obvious similarity in style between Carlock and Buckingham hand-colored pictures. Ethel Carlock died in 1920 during an influenza epidemic. Leaving Carlock a widower with a 15 month-old baby. Carlock was fascinated by the architecture and national treasures found in our nation's capital. Antique Map Iceland by Willem Bleau Hand Colored Copper Engraving 17th Century
Here is a beautiful antique map by Willem Bleau[Tabula Islandiae Auctore Georgio Carolo Flandro] From[Theatrum Orbis terrerum, sive, Atlas Novus] published by Willem and Johannes Blaeu, Amsterdam, hand-colored copper engraving on laid paper, mid 17th century. Fair condition, unframed, paper has some discoloration and chipping on the edges, as well as a couple small holes in the bottom border. There is also a 1" long slit in the paper on the right side stemming from where there is some chipping(it looks like someone started to make a crooked cut in this edge some time ago) Some pencil writing on the back. There is a 3/8" strip of old masking tape on the back that runs the length of the top of the map and 4" down each side. This tape was used to mount this map to the old matte. Measures 17" x 22 1/2" This is a double ... morepage engraving removed from a book so there is an impression/creases down the center where it was formerly bent within the pages of the book. This auction is for the actual item(s) as pictured. I find all of my items at estate sales. Antique stores, and flea markets. I do not repair any items or do anything other than a light cleaning and dusting. All items are sold as-found. I will do my best to note any flaws. He was outspoken in his writings and twice had to flee for his life from his native country. It is a little rough along the edge where it was removed from the bound volume and there are three pinholes at the outer edge of the top margin. Up for auction is 2 nice old whaling hand colored prints or they could be ink or watercolors. Very hard to tell, old wooden backs that don't seem to have been ever opened. One is marked Wm. Rodman who's family was famous Whalers in the New Bedford area. Has pictures of a right whale and sperm whale, along with his whaling ship and his flag. These are very old and one frame has a very old auction lot number on it. They were found in a very old house in Fairhaven, Mass hanging on the wall. Printed in the middle of the 19th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. What distinguishes this Meyer map is the very fine level of detail. It's almost as if the map was engraved with the point of a pin. Packing a staggering level of detail into a small area. In Fair to Good or better condition. Some overall light age browning to the sheet, some minor light age staining in spots as seen[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains mostly clean ... moreand visually pleasing, a nice impression of an interesting antique map.
