Title is General Chart of the North Atlantic or Western Ocean etc. etc. etc. London. 102 Minories 1855. This is a real sea going vessel navigating chart of the period. Backed with original blue paper with ribbon border sewn all around. A few moderate damp stains in the top right and the top middle(light& 3.5x 2 inches) Chart was rolled up and partially flattened while so leaving verticle crease lines. Shows trade winds, gulf stream, currents, times of year to sail either direction. Place names along the eastern coast of America from latitudes from Greenland to Guyana, S.A. as well as Europe and Africa coast in the same lats. Measuring about 35" x 46" This is US Navy Hydrographic Office Nautical Chart No. HO 26-E: West Indies- Little Bahama Bank, with Northwest Providence Channel, from British Surveys between 1817 and 1885, with aditionas from US Naval sonic surveys to 1959. Sure enough, the chart shows the whole of Great Bahama Island and Great Abaco Island, with the Northwest Providence Channel along the bottom and the Straits of Florida at the left. It is dated 1939, and stated to be the 10th Edition, revised through 1964, and with stamps referencing further revisions through 1965. The scale is 1:282,790. It is in good and usable condition. Measuring about 54" x 36" This is US Navy Hydrographic Office Nautical Chart No. 10021: West Indies- Anegada Passage with Adjacent Islands. Sure enough, the Virgin Islands(including St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) are at the far left, with most of the other Leeward Islands scattered across the chart, including St. Christopher, Nevis, St. Martin and Anguilla in the middle, and Barbuda, Antigua and Montserrat at the lower right. It is dated 1940, and stated to be the 41st Edition, revised through 1960. The scale is 1:325,000. It is in very good and usable condition. With some light surface and edge wear and creasing, and maybe a mis-fold or two or a corner tear, and it may also have some ink and/or crayon inscriptions on the back, some of which may have bled through, and perhaps also some notations or corrections on the map itself. ... moreThis came from the collection of an Esso tanker captain, who had the habit of writing at least the chart title and/or number in bold lettering on the back, sometimes also with other notes or reference numbers. This is a 1968 nautical chart of the Great Lakes and adjacent waterways. Map was produced by the Canadian Hydrographic Service of the Department of Energy. Mines, and Resources. Map measures approximately 20 inches by 40.5 inches. Only condition issue is that cover was stamped"Library" and"Library Pamphlet" and the words"Great Lakes" written in red pen on top, and all three were crossed out(see photos) Otherwise, very nice map. No tears or holes at creases.

The map covers from the Cocos Islands eastwards past Great Andaman. To Nicobar or Great Sambelong Island. Throughout, there are numerous depth soundings, notes on reefs, commentaries on the sea floor, and a wealth of additional practical information for the navigator. The Andaman Islands were well known even in antiquity. Though Ptolemy may have mentioned them under a different name, they were definitely referred to by 9th century Arab geographers. In the 10 century the Persian navigator Buzurg ibn Shahriyar of Ramhormuz refers to them in his narrative Ajaib al-Hind( The wonders of India) Shahriyar describes the inhabitants of Great Andaman as fierce cannibals- most likely the source for the very similar comment appearing on our map. Marco Polo also refers to the Andamans where, in one of his more whimsical and memorable passages, he describes the inhabitants as having heads like dogs. Shortly before this map was issued, in 1789, the British admiral Archibald Blair founded a penal colony on Chatham Island, near the southeastern extension of Great Andaman. Two years later, the colony was moved to the opposite, northwestern, portion of the Island and renamed Port Cornwallis. Ravaged by disease, the colony was abandoned after just two years. The map covers the western extension of Southeast Asia from the city of Arakan(today the magnificent and almost impossible to access ruin of Mrauk-U) south along the coastline to the Irrawaddy River Delta, inland to Rangoon(Yangon, here identified as Dagon, for the awe inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda) and then south past the Gulf of Martaban(Mawlamyine) to the Kyan River and Tavay Point(formerly Victoria Point, currently Kawthaung, the Thailand-Myanmar border) The map offers rich detail including ... morecountless depth soundings, notes on the sea floor, commentary on reefs, rhumb lines, and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. The interior is predominantly blank and annotations on the map clearly refer to a general lack of information regarding the region. Nonetheless, the 1748 site of an English factory on the Persain River(Currently Pathein, Myanmar) is identified and various inland river routes are tenuously ghosted in. Four large inset maps fill the empty space. These include a plan of the Martaban River(modern Mawlamyine) and the sacred Buddhist shrine at Quekmay(Kyaiktiyo) the precariously balanced Golden Rock Pagoda. Another map illustrating the Arakan River entrance, though the map does not continue inland as far as the city of Arakan, today’s Mrauk-U. A third plan details the Sirian River, the modern Irrawaddy River, identifying the site of Rangoon(Yangon) as Dagon. A finally the fourth inset focuses on the entrance to the Perseen River, an important trade artery developed prior Rangoon and the site of an early British trading post at Pathein. The left hand side being a general nautical chart of the approaches to Bencoolen and Fort Marlborough, the right hand plans are details of Rat Island and Poolo Bay. Bencoolen(Bengkulu) was established as a pepper-trading center by the British East India Company in 1685. By the time this map was drawn Bencoolen ... morehas been renamed'Old Bencoolen' being superseded in 1714 by Fort Marlborough just to the south. The map offers considerable detail on the approaches to Bencoolen for which Rat Island(top right submap) is an important marker, as well as a staging post were vessels could dry anchor and dry nets. Poolo Bay(Pulau Bay) bottom right submap) some seven miles south of Fort Marlborough, was at the time an excellent harbor and anchorage. There our map identifies godowns or warehouses as well as lime kilns and a fresh water source. Laurie and Whittle prepared this chart for their 1799 issue of the East-India Pilot. Though most charts in the East-India Pilot were derived from earlier maps prepared for Jean-Baptiste d'Apres de Mannevillette’s 1745 Neptune Oriental, this particular chart is a new production unique to Laurie and Whittle. The map offers rich detail including countless depth soundings, notes on the sea floor, commentary on reefs, rhumb lines, shoals, place names and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. Particularly to the west in the Formosa Strait and around the Pescadore Islands. Countless depth soundings throughout. When Imray drew this nautical chart, very little was known about the seas between China and the Philippines.
