The full title of the map is: An Accurate Map of the Islands of St. Christopher and Nevis in the West Indies By An Officer with the position of the English and French Fleets February 7th 1782. The French attacked Admiral Hood is Basse Terre and were twice repulsed. Eventually. However the French captured the island, only subsequently to be badly beaten at sea by the British. The map is hand colored. It signed under the title by J.Cary SC(John Cary c.1754-1835: John Cary and his brother William were active globe-makers in London though John Cary was also an engraver and publisher and came to be regarded as one of the leading English cartographers) Under the map is inscribed: Published April 1. 1782 by J.Fielding, Pater noster Row; J.Sevill, Cornhill and J.Debrett, Piccadilly. Beginning in 1851, John Tallis& Co. issued their Illustrated Atlas, which contained maps of all parts of the world. These detailed maps are particularly prized for their decorative borders and the small finely engraved vignettes of indigenous scenes, people, etc. Generally regarded as the most decorative mid 19th Century Atlas map of its type. As the the French Navy's hydrographer and chartmaker he had access to the finest information available to any mapmaker and used this to publish a large variety of atlases including'Petit Atlas Maritime' as well as his contribution to L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' The map of Grenada shows the parishes and towns such as'Ft. Royal' Grand Marquis' Sauteurs' Goyave' Maigrin' and'Grand Pauvre' The map has good detail to features of the landscape and notes small towns, points and bays.
