It is very difficult to find all sheets together, and since some of the sheets are untitled(as here) likely they sifted through the sands of time unrecognized. Even Lowery was challenged to piece it all together. Ottens’ firm began selling the first sheets of Grand Théâtre de la Guerre en Amérique in October 1740. Customers purchased them as they came off the press. And the final sheets were available in June 1741. Added to that complexity is the fact that copies of Ottens’ atlas, which was always made up, vary as to the presence and number of these maps, since clients had to option of buying any number of them they wished. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici. III, pp. 85-93: The Ottens firm greatest fame comes from the voluminous atlases assembled to order. Lowery 356(Gulf of Mexico only; see also Lowery 257& 427) Phillips Atlases 3495:117-118. The historical impetus for Ottens’ Grand Théâtre de la Guerre en Amérique map was the spillover from the war of Austrian secession and Jenkins’ Ear. ANTIQUE MAP OF BERMUDA AND ST. KITTS. This map was published by Emmanuel Bowen(1693-1767) in London in 1747. The complete sheet measures 16X19 inches. With the plate being 13.9X17 inches. The condition is very good. It has old paper reinforcements done long ago. Picture 6 shows part of it lifting, but really not effecting anything, best left alone. Picture 7-8 shows reinforcements at top and bottom, again, done long ago. Again, these are not uncommon, and for me, add to the great character this map has. The coloring is great, I've researched this map on the internet, and it retails for $1200-$1800, and this is in comparable condition. It's a beauty.

It seems the c.1748 Le Rouge plates were acquired by Crepy. Who re-issued them in Paris with his imprint& the date 1767 in the cartouches. What distinquishes this later but much scarcer issue of the map is the beautiful full hand color, not typically found on the earlier Le Rouge issues, which are often found colored only in outline. The various stations on the map are labeled in both Nahuatl and loose English translation. Aztlan appears here in the upper right corner as a lake in which sits a mountain and a palm tree. The progression meanders along many paths and digressions to finally arrive upper right quadrant where we see a hill upon which rests a gigantic Grasshopper- Chapultepec. According to legend on exactly May 24, 1065 CE, the Mexica(Aztec) began an epic migration from their ancestral homeland, Aztlan, which translated means“Place of Reeds” or“Place of Egrets” to the shores of Lake Texcoco, in Mexico’s Central Mesa. There they founded the city of Tenochtitlan which in time spawned the vast Aztec Empire famously encountered by Hernan Cortez several hundred years later. The migration, which seems to have lasted some 250 years, is comparable in scope to the biblical wanderings of the Israelites recorded in Exodus. The legends associated with the Aztec wanderings gave birth to this conceptual map of places and events. 1781 Bonne Map- Carte de L'Isle de St. Domingue. Une des Grandes Antilles Rigobert Bonne was the fortunate successor to J.N. Bellin as the official hydrographer/chartmaker to the French navy and. Like his predecessor, used the position for furtherance of his private atlas publications. Both Raynal's'Atlas de toutes les parties connues du Monde' of 1780-81 and the'Atlas Encyclopaedique' of 1787-88 owe much to the massive map resources of the French naval ministry. This map is from'Atlas de toutes. published in 1781. This map of the island of Hispaniola(present day Dominican Republic and Haiti) has excellent topographical detail and shows a large number of settlements as well as the French/Spanish division of the island.
