1781 Bonne Map- L'Isle de Cuba Rigobert Bonne was the fortunate successor to J.N. Bellin as the official hydrographer/chartmaker to the French navy and. Like his predecessor, used the position for furtherance of his private atlas publications. Both Raynal's'Atlas de toutes les parties connues du Monde' of 1780-81 and the'Atlas Encyclopaedique' of 1787-88 owe much to the massive map resources of the French naval ministry. This engraving is from Raynal's Atlas. This engraving shows the island of Cuba as well as the Bahamas and Dry Tortugas to the north and the Cayman Islands to the south. 1776 Salmon Map- Golfe du Mexique Thomas Salmon(1679- 1767) was an early travel and historical writer and was extremely successful despite his relatively humble upbringing. Much of his success was probably due to the fact that he experienced much of what he wrote about and had travelled throughout Europe as well as residing in the East Indies for some time. He also travelled with Commodore Anson on his piratical voyage around the world. His best known works are'A New Geographical& Historical Grammar' first issued 1749 but many editions) and'The Universal Traveller' 1752) These works were translated into French as was'Description Generale de L'Univers' with 28 maps in 1776. Geographer and publisher who dominated English cartography in the mid-1700's along with his fellow mapmakers, and sometime collaborators, Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin. Centered on Haiti or San Domingo(Hispaniola) The map covers the Caribbean from Florida to Venezuela and from Yucatan to the Lesser Antilles. It includes the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and San Domingo(Hispaniola) Porto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Leeward and Windward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. It also shows parts of Guatemala, Venezuela, New Granada and the Isthmus of Panama. The map also marks the Mosquito Gulf or the Bay of Mosquitoes, which is a corruption of the Moskito, its indigenous tribal inhabitants. Thanks for looking. you are bidding on a one of a kind antique map. This map was hand drawn on birch tree bark with ink and quill. This map is very unique and very detailed to the point of the water level being one layer of bark cut out to be lower than the land. A couple of other unique features is the spelling of Pacific Ocean and were the tree branch was in the bark being used to indicate a mountain. see photos) I obtained this map from an elderly gentleman who said he was remodeling a basement in North Seattle in 1985 and when they pulled back the chicken wire in an old wall. This map fell out. It has been in this frame ever since. The frame is 15in wide by 12in tall. From Nicaragua to Panama, with two vignette views, printed more than 162 years ago. This map delineates the proposed railway across the Isthmus of Panama. This railroad was opened in 1855. Four years after this map was printed, providing the infrastructure that would determine the location of the future canal, which began construction in 1880. The map also shows a proposed road across Veragua from Lake Chiriqui to the Pacific Ocean at Bágala. And it locates the proposed canal connecting Lake Nicaragua with Greytown via the Mosquito and San Juan Rivers. A handsome vignette at the upper right shows the fort at Chagre. In the lower left. For sale is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAP DONE BY NICOLAS DE FER IN 1702. THE MAP IS TITLED LES ISLES DE L' AMERIQUE. It shows D' ANTILLES. LES ISLES DE CUBA, ST. DOMINGUE, ET JAMAIQUE. The condition is Superb. The photos show some vey light shadowing at the bottom left corner of the map, but this is from the photography and is not on the map itself. This beautiful map is museum matted and framed. The frame measures 15" x 19 1/2" DE FER Nicolas Nicolas de Fer(1646-1720) was the son of Antoine de Fer. Also a map engraver and colourist in his own right who had worked with Nicolas Berey and acted as an editor for Pierre Duval's"Cartes De Geographie. of 1657. However, it was Nicolas who was to become one of the most prolific publishers of his time. De Fer was able to make the publishing business flourish and in 1690 he was ... morenominated as geographer to the Dauphin- their relationship had reciprocal benefits with De Fer producing. In effect, royal propaganda concerning the Dauphin's lands with each publication enhancing his own name and reputation, as well as that of the Dauphin. When the Duke of Anjou ascended the throne in 1702, De Fer had the dual title of"geographe du roi d'Espagne et du Dauphin" De Fer published a number of atlases including the"Cotes de France" of 1690(containing Tassin's maps) and the"Forces de l'Europe ou Introduction a la fortification" Also of 1690, that reinforced his abilities and success with the buying public. Subsequent publications included the"Petit et Nouveau Atlas" which appeared in 1697, followed by the"Atlas Curieux" The"Atlas Curieux" was well-known and popular, being expanded in successive editions between 1700 and 1705, and was re-edited in 1714 and 1716 under the title"Suite de l'Atlas Curieux" De Fer also produced a number of folio maps that appeared in the"Atlas ou Recueil de cartes" which was published in 1709.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Old Dutch Map of St. Thomas(Virgin Islands) Dated 1719 This map is an enigma to me. A friend thinks it’s from 1719. I’m sitting on the fence. It is old and has seen a lot of years. It has been pinned and taped to a wall(s) at more than one time as evidenced by the tape that is there(will take paper with it if tried to remove. Will leave for buyer) There are fold lines and some insect damage to the upper right corner(I don’t think bugs eat modern paper? I found a copy of this map on the web and it measured 39” by 21” This copy measures 24 ¼” by 18 7/8” There is yellowing to the map and it looks to have been matted in a frame at one time. As there is a lighter color of paper around the edges of the map as if it were covered. Anyway. It is what it is, I don’t know why anyone would copy ... morean obscure map like this in modern times, that’s what keeps me on the fence. No doubt. In the upper right is the principle harbor of St. Thomas, Charlotte Amalie Harbor with Fort Christian prominently displayed. In the lower right is Cruz Bay on the island of Saint John. The map is beautifully engraved and embellished with rhumb lines. Sailing ships and compass roses. A cartouche crowning the distance scales dedicates the map to Erik Bredal, governor of the Danish West India Company.
