The map shows the Caribbean from Puerto Rico to Trinidad with the hatched area indicating the direction of the trade winds. It was engraved for Smollet's Continuation of the History of England. A highly decorative and early map with a watermark that can be seen in the last auction photo. Thomas Kitchin(or Thomas Kitchen) 1718–1784) was an English engraver and cartographer. Who became hydrographer to the king. He was also an author, who wrote about the history of the West Indies. He was born in Southwark, and was apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen in 1732. On offer is a huge chromolithograph map of Central America. The Caribbean and northern South America produced in 1901 by Julius Bien& Company of New York for a report to the US Congress from the First Isthmian Canal Commission(1899-1900) It’s in remarkable condition for its age and measures 42 inches by 28 inches. The folds are as-issued. This chart, depicting numerous active volcanos near the proposed alternative to the Panama Canal in Nicaragua, was one of the reasons the commission eventually decided to go with the Panama route over the Nicaraguan one. The first ICC was a group of engineers appointed in 1899 by Congress to investigate the feasibility of a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This is plate 21 from their original report. The cartographer. This is an 1887 map of Cuba. The map measures 21 X 15 inches. Rand McNally was known for printing maps using the latest surveys. This is one of the rarest of all Rand McNally maps. It is from the 1887 Business Atlas. Only one other copy is known to exist and it is in the Roger S. Baskes Collection at the Newberry Library. Chicago, Illinois. 1784 Bayly Map- A New Map of the West Indies John Bayly was an engraver who worked in London. England in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Much of his output was single cartographic items of larger size and he did little work for the atlas publishers of the day. However his one venture into mass map publishing was for John Harrison who published William Martyn's'The Geographical Magazine or a New, Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography' in 1784. Pellet, Geneva, 1780 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the map of Martinique compiled by the French cartographer Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) for the atlas volume that accompanied the profoundly influential Histoire philosophique et politique. Des etablissements et du commerce des europeens dans les deux Indes by(1713-1796) Bonne succeeded Bellin as Chief Royal Hydrogapher at the Depôt de la Marine in 1773 and while his principal focus was on the production of marine charts. He also published general atlases throughout his career. The unusually detailed map is a result of the fact that the Caribbean was a principal focus of Raynal's work. Which proved so controversial that it was banned and publicly ... moreburned owing to its anti-slavery sentiments and criticisms of the Catholic church expressed by the former Jesuit. Published at a time when there were some 60,000 slaves in Martinique, to get a sense of Raynal's rhetoric on the subject of slavery we present an excerpt in translation from the French original: The sacrilegious yoke of oppression shall be broken as the Negro slaves lack only a chief. Sufficiently courageous to lead them on to vengeance and slaughter. Spanish, Portuguese, British, French, Dutch- all these tyrants will become the victims of fire and sword. The plains of America will voraciously soak up the blood which they have long awaited, and the bones of so many wretched victims, heaped upon one another during so many centuries, will leap for joy. The map is notable for its pictorial topography and is rightly considered one of the most desirable 18th century maps of Martinique- note elegant symmetrical"overspill" beyond map border at upper left and lower right.
