Antique Japanese Sword O-Wakizashi Wood Scabbard, Marked Tang 16th c SAMARI
Antique Japanese Samurai Sword. O Wakizashi, marked tang, with wood scabbard. We are very pleased to be able to offer for your consideration this antique Japanese hand made sword estimated age 16th century. This katana style Samurai sword has a smaller blade. And was most likely the secondary sword a Samurai would wear. Depending on a blade length between 12- 24 inches they were called either ko-wakizashi(shorter) or o-wakizashi for the longer version. This secondary blade was useful as a single handed sword, and it's length and weight made it an excellent design for close combat. This sword weighs 1.75 pounds, with the scabbard the total weight is 2.25 pounds. The tsuba is a very simple open design. The tsuka has a wrap that is somewhat unusual, there is ray fish skin, but there are no menuki and the wrap(ito) is solid on 3/4 of the ... moretsuka, with three open diamonds close to the tsuba. The fuchi is a simple matte black metal, but there is a insignia inside an octagon shape, flanked by a very subtle design of line work. There are only two seppa used, one on each side of the tsuba. The kashira has a worn design, but it carries a beautifully warm patina. The blade itself is a bit discolored(we won't clean it) but the edge is extremely clean and still very keen. There are no nicks, or fractures. The tang shows signs of oxidation, and it has been marked, there looks to be a white pigment in the marks. The tsuka is approximately 8 inches long. The blade is approximately 24 1/4 inches long. Condition- The overall condition of this sword is excellent. The scabbard is wood. It does have some issues. The scabbard is missing an inlay(see picture) the scabbard is also split almost the entire length. The metal tip and the trim piece at the mouth of the scabbard are keeping the two side together. Authentic Japanese Samurai Sword in Mounts More pictures of this sword are on Onihonto.com Pictures Updated on 4/25 This blade is guaranteed an authentic Nihonto(traditionally made) This is a real Samurai Sword. These blades were made by folding hard steel many times over and then sandwiching tougher steel in between. This made for an extremely sharp. Yet break resistant, sword. The temper line(hamon) is beautiful Choji(clove pattern) with some nice hatarake(activity) Utsuri is present. Choji hamon is a favorite of many collectors because of it's beauty. Remeniscent of the Ichimonji School of sword making. The jigane is bright. The hada is nicely worked Mokume(burling) in both the ji and shinogi-ji. The color of rust on the nakago, indicates this sword is old. I am unsure how old. This sword is mumei(unsigned) and has one hole in the ... morenakago(tang) It looks to have had a gimei removed at some point. It was cut down from a longer blade, as indicated by the temper line continuing through the nakago. The blade has normal patina. As one would expect to find on a sword from the era. There is some very light shinae in the shinogi-ji which will polish out. The kissaki was poorly shaped by the last togishi(polisher) but boshi is present. No fatal flaws. This sword is very healthy for its age. I recommend this sword for restoration, as it should polish out fault free and beautiful. The koshirae(mounts) look to be civilian mounts from the Showa Period. Or perhaps Tosa. The tsuba looks to be very old, but is in bad condition. The tsuba may even be original to the blade. The Fuchi Kashira are Cherry Blossom Mon type. The menuki are Rooster, which symbolize pride, honor, courage and viligence in Asian culture. The mounts, as a whole, are in very good condition with normal patina. It is a good sword. I may regret selling this one. Every sword collector I have showed this to says. If you always wanted a nice affordable antique Japanese sword with nice koshirae here is your chance.The sword is a wakizashi length. Blade is signed NORIMUNE and has a 3 hole tang blade also has a Buddist horimono engraving. The blade dates from the mid 1600's to the early 1700's I believe. Blade needs a polish. Sword in sheath measures approx 25 1/4 inches long with blade measuring approx 19 3/4 inches overall and from notch where habaki meets blade measured straight is approx 15 3/8inches long and handle is approx 6 1/4 inches long. Tsuba handguard has gold inlay as does the fuchi and end of scabbard has some gold and silver inlay. Handle has obviously been ... morerewrapped and has WWII era menuki under wrapping.scabbard has bumpy texture of some type and blade fits snug in scabbard.handguard wiggles a bit and my guess several of its original spacers are gone.tiny dagger that once fit in scabbard is long gone but scabbard has slot for one. Old Japanese Sword Wakizashi Wide & Thick Blade
Up for auction we have a Japanese sword wakizashi. This early edo period blade has some potential there is nothing major wrong just some improper cleaning(no grinding wheel) This has a very wide and heavy blade about a 1 1/4 right before mune-machi and about 1/4 inch thice at mune-machi. Has an undisturbed thick rusted tang that has never been shortened and overall the blade measures 23 1/2 inches. The kissaki is in good shape and I do not see any fatal flaws to blade or bends. The trunk belonged to a WWII veteran who saw action in Japan. Through Internet research I*BELIEVE* this item is known as a Japanese Wakizashi sword. As you can see in some of the close up photos the wooden handle has been signed in 3 separate places in what I believe is Japanese. Please verify on your own. The overall length of the sword is about 24 1/2 inches. The actual cutting edge is about 17 inches. Given its possible age I believe it is in pretty good condition. There are some areas of rust. There are some scratches and a little pitting. The tang is rusty and I do not see it signed on the tang itself.
