Diether of Isenburg( Diether von Isenburg. C. 1412– 7 May 1482) was Elector and Archbishop of Mainz from 1459 until 1461, and again from 1475 until 1482. Diether was a son of Diether I. Count of Isenburg-Büdingen. Early in childhood he was sent into a religious life. He was educated in Cologne and ... morelater Erfurt. In 1427 he became a member of Mainz Cathedral, in 1434 a rector in Erfurt, and in 1453 a cathedral vicar. In 1456 the cathedral chapter of Trier elected John II of Baden against Diether. On 18 June 1459 he was elected the Archbishop of Mainz with a clear majority over Adolph of Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein, although never confirmed by the Pope. In 1461 he went to Nuremberg for Imperial and Papal reform, and its recommendations earned him the wrath of both the Emperor Frederick III and Pope Pius II. Diether refused to cease reforms in the church. And thus Pius II declared Adolph of Nassau the Archbishop of Mainz, beginning the Mainzer Feud. The archdiocese was wracked by violent warfare. On the night of 28 October 1462 Adolph captured the city of Mainz, killed 400 citizens and had another 400 including Johannes Gutenberg exiled, and revoked its town charter and status as an Imperial City. However Diether did not leave the city until 1463. When Adolph died in 1475 he recommended Diether be his successor, and on 9 November that year he was again elected. The reformist Pope Sixtus IV confirmed him. In 1477 Diether donated the University of Mainz to the city. He died

His political and cultural ambitions, based in Sicily and stretching through Italy to ... moreGermany, and even to Jerusalem, were enormous. However, his enemies, especially the popes, prevailed, and his dynasty collapsed soon after his death. A very rare. Well provenanced and extremely fine quality English Medieval gold pound coin of Queen Elizabeth I, sixth issue) struck 1594- 1596. The obverse depicting the crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth I. Towards the end of her reign. She is shown facing left, her long, flowing hair cascading down onto her wonderfully ornate, jeweled dress, topped by a tall, undulating ruff, all inside a pelleted border. The legend reading: ELIZABETH D G ANG FRA ET HIB REGINA"Elizabeth by the Grace of God Queen of England France and Ireland" The reverse with crowned and square topped shield of arms. ER at sides. The legend reading: SCVTVM FIDEI PROTEGET EAM"May the Shield of Faith Protect Her" Woolpack(1594-6 sixth issue) mint mark before legend. A superb example of what is probably the most iconic coin type of England's last Tudor ... moremonarch. It has previously been noted that the Pound is'perhaps the most attractive of all the gold coins of the Tudor period. Although the first English'milled' coins were produced in a screw press(by Eloye Mestrelle) early in Elizabeth's reign. The Pound pieces were struck by hand using the old method. It is therefore surprising that what is essentially a crudely made coin has such a wealth of detail' Dimensions; 38 mm. Weight: 10.80 g. Condition: Near Extremely fine. The cavetto(walls of the cup) are bell shaped and painted with thick cobalt blue line exteriorly. Depicting diamond registers alternating with leaf scrolls in curved reserve. We know that the Hoi An wares were produced in Kilns near modern-day Hanoi and were probably bound for the European Market before the ship was cruelly destroyed and sunk 250 feet into the cold waters of the South China Sea. The fascinating story of the Hoi-An and its recovery has been made into a best-selling novel by Frank Pope, entitled Dragon Sea: A True Tale of Treasure. Archeology, and Greed Off the Coast of Vietnam. In contrast to many unprovenanced Hoi An pieces on the market. This ceramic has been officially recorded by the Vietnamese authorities(VISAL) whose sticker is affixed to the artifact. The recent ratification of the UNESCO convention by South East Asian countries will effectively put a halt to all future shipwreck salvage operations. Consequently, legitimately recorded pieces such as the present example are finite in supply and currently represent a fantastic investment opportunity. Diameter: approx 3 1/2 inches. Condition: Very well preserved. Minor chips consistent with long term ocean burial. Close inspection reveals areas of beautiful marine encrustations, fascinating evidence of the centuries spent undisturbed on the ocean floor

Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Often mistaken for ruby or sapphire in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Many of the so-called"rubies" and“sapphires” in Europe's crown jewels are actually spinel. The most famous is the Black Prince's"Ruby" a magnificent 170-carat red s Looking like very flashy, sparkly, radiant bright red intensely hued ruby or padparadsha(red-orange) sapphires, one instantly knows they are not merely ... moretourmaline or garnet due to the tremendous brilliance and flash of the gemstones. Are they corundum; sapphire or ruby? They have all the fire and sparkle of precious gemstones. Actually if you were able to examine the crown jewels of the royal families of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Europe from England to Russia, you would find many fabulous examples of these gemstones. And had you been able to ask the actual owners of these gemstones, royalty all, or their royal jewelers as to the identity of these gemstones, they would have answered ruby or sapphire– corundum. But history would prove them wrong, as many of the greatest, most massive, and most valuable rubies and sapphires in the crown jewels of Europe’s royalty were…spinel. With nearly the same hardness as corundum, and similar flash and brilliance(refractive index) spinel has been mistaken for rubies, sapphires, and other precious gemstones for centuries. A Super Condtiion Bronze Medieval Ring dating to about the 14th C A.D. 2 cm in diameter Powered by
Up for bids here is a very unique Pentagram ring from the early medieval period that is not like most of the ones out there that I have seen in the past. This one has small dots in and around the pentagram and on the sides. The ring measures 21mm in diameter. This could have some connections to the Knight's Templar but I cannot confirm this and this is only speculation at this point. But the possibilities are there considering the period and the style of this particular ring. And the side markings; which make this one rare, as they appear to be of the same type found on some Templar rings and other jewelry. Pentagrams have a very long history and is one of the oldest symbols in the ancient world. One like this one is rather rare because of the markings on the sides. Avoid the bidding war and hit"By It Now" for this great price! ... moreThanks for looking! Posted with

Bronze Icon Probably Byzantine Medieval Christian 14-18 AD Depict Virgin Mary(Mother of Jesus) Dimention 37x47 mm Wonderful bronze Icon from the majestic Byzantine Empire with a rich history and great quality Mary(mother of Jesus) Mary was an Israelite Jewish woman of Nazareth in Galilee who lived in the late 1st century BC and early 1st century AD. And was the mother of Jesus. Among her many other names and titles are the Virgin Mary or Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary, Mother of God, and Saint Mary in Western churches, and the Theotokos in Orthodox Christianity, and Maryam, mother of Isa in Islam. She is identified in the New Testament[Mt 1:16,18-25]Lk 1:26-56]2:1-7]2] and in the Qur'an as the mother of Jesus through divine intervention. Christians hold her son Jesus to be Christ(i.e. the messiah) and God the Son Incarnate(see Trinitarian ... moremonotheism) whereas Muslims regard Jesus as the messiah and one of the most important prophets of God sent to mankind. The canonical gospels of Matthew and Luke describe Mary as a virgin(Greek παρθένος. Parthénos) Traditionally, Christians believe that she conceived her son miraculously by the agency of the Holy Spirit. Muslims believe that she conceived by the command of God. This took place when she was already betrothed to Saint Joseph and was awaiting the concluding rite of marriage, the formal home-taking ceremony.4] She married Joseph and accompanied him to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. In keeping with Jewish custom, the betrothal would have taken place when she was around 12, and the birth of Jesus about a year later. The New Testament begins its account of Mary's life with the Annunciation. When the angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced her divine selection to be the mother of Jesus. Church tradition and early non-biblical writings state that her parents were an elderly couple, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne. The Bible records Mary's role in key events of the life of Jesus from his conception to his Ascension. Apocryphal writings tell of her subsequent

Here is a stunning tapestry bought from Hines of Oxford some years back. It is the most superb quality weave giving an almost 3D effect. Fantastic detail. Made in France. It is called'Scenes Galantes' It is in lovely condition and has always been displayed in a passage way with no direct sun. It is from a smoke and pet free home. The back has one or two marks I guess from being in contact with the wall. The whole tapestry would probably benefit from a light dusting I would say. As it has been on display. Dimensions are approx. 93cm x 107cm. Please see photos for details. Please see the following link for the Hines of Oxford page. A variation of the very same tapestry is still available starting at £1395! I paid over £600 for this one about 4 years ago. I've tried to find the original invoice but just can't place ... moreit. An extremely rare Ancient Viking bronze scabbard chape. Depicting the Norse god Odin, dating to approximately 800-900 A.D. The chape is of usual Viking form and is constructed in openwork technique. The decoration is in'Jelling' style and depicts a central moustached figure on both sides. With bulging eyes, triangular nose and slit mouth. Both figures are surrounded by an elaborate intertwined complex of foliage and animals. The central figure, probably representing the Norse God Odin, appears to be holding the sprouting branches with both hands. On one side the figure appears to have a circular navel. Two bear heads lie at the top of the chape. A remarkably complex masterpiece of Viking art. The chape would have attached to the very distal end on the scabbard in ancient times. Securing the leather in place. An inferior piece can ... morenow be seen at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK. 1 Length: 2 7/8 inches. Condition: Unrestored. Extremely well preserved with an even. Olive-green patina. It appears that a small area of one side of the chape has been flattened in antiquity, with the insertion of two tiny iron pins. It seems likely that an attempt was made to repair the damaged portion in ancient times, attesting to its value. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Reputedly found in Scandinavia in the 1950's. References: 1 Ashmolean Museum reference number AN1909.95. Found in Gotland, Sweden. For a picture of the piece, see the. However, his enemies, especially the popes, prevailed, and his dynasty collapsed soon after his death. Historians have searched for superlatives to describe him, as in the case of Professor Donald Detwiler, who wrote:A man of extraordinary culture, energy, and ability– called by a contemporary chronicler stupor mundi(the wonder of the world) By Nietzsche the first European, and by many historians the first modern ruler– Frederick established in Sicily and southern Italy something very much like a modern, centrally governed kingdom with an efficient bureaucracy. Viewing himself as a direct successor to the Roman Emperors of Antiquity. He was Emperor of the Romans from his papal coronation in 1220 until his death; he was also a claimant to the title of King of the Romans from 1212 and unopposed holder of that monarchy from 1215.
