Up for bids is this Antique American Redware Figural Jug Coin Bank- Dated 1792 with an inscription about saving. The inscription is in ink and dated April ... more12. 1792 which is probably not when this piece was made because this piece looks like it dates between 1830's and 1850's. But the inscription of 1792 could be right we just are not sure. The writing is very light and difficult to see in the photos and there are fingerprints potted into this piece. The redware jug stands 4 7/8" high and has a 2 1/2" base diameter. Condition is good with some flea bites. There is one on the top rim where the lip is near the redware cork and some much smaller ones with some on the opening where coins are inserted. No cracks or repairs. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. Shipping will be $8.95 Priority Mail to anywhere in the USA. Thanks for looking!

8", handle broken loose at top. Wear as shown, a few glaze flakes in top rim interior. Possibly antique. JS might be one of two documented Hagerstown ... morepotters who had the initials, J.S., for their name: Jacob Smith and John Snavely. As noted by Shenandoah Valley pottery expert, H.E. Comstock, in his book, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, Smith was apprenticed to Peter Bell between 1808 and 1818, and ceased working at the pottery at that time. These incised initials resemble those of Snavely. I am selling this as is, no date implied.

Here's a beautiful. 19th century redware pitcher in very good condition! Thick, rugged, and heavy, this piece has an ovoid shape with a wide midsection. ... moreIt has a gorgeous blend of colors including mustard, brown, and greens. The glaze& oxides were somehow applied in a manner where it didn't adhear in certain places and other parts were not glazed at all, including the bottom. In other areas the glaze is drizzled or running downward. When fired, interesting characteristics were created including mottling and a speckled effect. The unglazed red portions have an original, grungy patina that's the result of past use, places it was kept, and the passage of time. Oddly enough. There's some sort of slip decoration on the front, under the spout, that is difficult to discern. It probably was a name or some sort of writing and part of a date where a mistake was made and the entire piece was glazed over in this unique manner to cover it up. It looks like a capital letter C with a last name under it, followed by 1874 or 1879, perhaps. The way the piece was glazed as well as wear and tear makes it very difficult to make out. In fact, we didn't really notice the writing until after viewing one of the photos while posting this auction. It's an interesting peak into the history of this old pitcher and perhaps if you are skilled, you may be able to determine what it says under that glaze. Regardless. This is a very attractive piece of pottery that also has decorative incised bands, an applied handle, a charming country-style shape, and of course its very nice coloring. It measures 10 1/4 inches high while the diameter of the bottom is 4 1/8 inches. The opening of the pitcher is 5 1/4 inches including the spout and the widest point in the middle is 7 1/2 inches. It weighs over 4 pounds. We found no cracks or hairlines, only some old pitting on the interior that isn't structurally significant. There is surface wear and loss of glaze but nothing that detracts from its beauty. This piece is still even

Unusual Antique redware Eleven-Hole Ocarina Black and Gold Coloring
Antique Redware Black& Gold 11-Hole Ocarina Made in Austria? For your Redware or Musical Instrument Collection Details Description: Very interesting and unusual piece of glazed redware. Here is an Ocarina. An ancient flute-like wind instrument. Variations do exist, but a typical ocarina is an enclosed space with four to twelve finger holes and a mouthpiece that projects from the body. This particular Ocarina has 11-holes and the mouth piece does project from the body. The piece is colored in black and the finger holes are numbered and lettered in gold coloring. The piece is also decorated with gold coloring at the two ends. The Ocarina is also stamped with the letter"G" and the number"9" near where the mouth piece meets the body of the instrument. The piece does give a beautiful sound when you blow into the mouth piece ... moreopening and you can change the tone by covering various finger opening. Very interesting. There are two ovals on the body of the Ocarina. Both are colored in gold, one has the name of the maker and the words Mad in and a word we believe maybe saying Austria, but we are truly unable to ascertain it. The other oval is blank and looks like two intersecting circles. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Uncertain. Possibly early 1900s or earlier. Origin: Uncertain but most likely somewhere in Europe. Possibly Austria. Size: ~7" long. And ~4" high including the mouth piece. The piece weighs over 10 1/2 ounces. Maker: Unknown Marks: Has what appears to be a makers mark indicating who the maker is and where the piece is made within a gold colored oval. However. We are unable to decipher the words or letters. The piece also has the letter G and the number 9 stamped into it. Distinguishing Characteristics- Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice and unusual piece of redware with beautiful coloring and details. Condition: The piece is in very good condition with no cracks. Repairs, or hairlines. It does have so

Antique Primitive Redware Stoneware Pitcher/Pennsylvania Dutch?/Hand Painted

Antique Stoneware: Fine 19thC. PA Redware Crock or Jar, Semi-Ovoid, Lead Glaze
Whether you call this a Cream Jar. Crock or Planter, one thing is for sure: this is a monumental 19thC. piece of Redware! Unmarked, but having a capacity of 4Gal. this extra-large Jar will be at home in any Antique Stoneware collection. Antique Mottled Redware Jar, Primitive Lead Glazed Pot 19th Century Folk Pottery
Up for bids we offer this genuine. 19th Century redware pottery jar in very good, well-preserved condition. It's a rugged, utility pot that has a charming, bulbous shape with two applied handles. This piece is lead glazed and colored with oxides, green being the main color along with rust-colored mottling and touches of mustard yellow too. It's a striking blend of colors that really makes this pot stand out in a room. The inside of it is completely glazed while most of the sides of the exterior are too. The outside area close to the bottom edge and the entire underside are not glazed and the original dry and dirty red clay surface is exposed. There are a pair of decorative, incised bands near the top and a number 2 impressed in the surface just above them, on one side As to be expected. This old redware jar shows lots of age, however ... moreit is in very good overall shape! It's solid, sound, and not deteriorating in any way. The opening rim has a shallow chunk out of it and a small chip in the opposite side. They are old flaws that likely happened during use way back when, they have the same patina as the rest of the piece and have been worn smooth over time. The edge of the bottom also has a little chipping in a couple places which is typical for an early household piece such as this. There are no cracks or hairlines and the handles are in great condition, it's amazing a piece as old as this one didn't sustain a break in one or both of its handles. You'll find that the glaze on one side is much glossier than that on the other side; the interior glaze is very flat too. Not considered special back in its time, this old jar was for everyday use and the wear and tear it has is indicative of that. As for measurements. It stands 6 5/8 inches high and has a bottom diameter of 3 5/8 inches while the opening measures 5 inches across. Handle to handle, the widest portion is 7 inches. There are no repairs to this piece. As the photos show, this is a handsome example of mid 19th Century redware with rich,

However, when looking at the glaze closely one can clearly see the black colored specs within it, just nice. This wide mouth crock has ... morea round flat base with flared rounded sides which end in a flat outwards projecting and slightly slanted downwards rim. The rim is also glazed with the same brown colored glaze used throughout. The interior of the crock is glazed and has some soiling or residue from use, which we did not attempt to clean. PRIMITIVE ANTIQUE~GLAZED & HAND PAINTED REDWARE MILK JUG w/STRAP HANDLE
This old redware strap-handled crock milk jug is incredible! It has obviously been used. But is in amazing condition for its age. Has a hand applied handle, and a green spatter glaze, with lighter greenish daubs of glaze around the shoulder. Glazed inside and out. Has quite a few manufacturing flaws that don't affect the beauty of this piece. No maker's marks that I can see. Probably this piece is Pennsylvania Dutch, mid to late 1800s. Interestingly, this type of redware has been made since the late 1600s, and is made from the same material as bricks and roof tiles. See photos. Unsure of exact age or maker. No damage to this piece. Except for it being really dirty. See photos. 7 1/2" tall x 6 1/4" in diameter including handle. PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT MY OTHER LISTINGS. AND MY STORE, CROSS CREEK MARKET, TOO! Antique Pennsylvania? Large Oval Redware Baking Dish Mustard Yellow Glaze
Here's an old OLD large. Oval-shaped, heavy baking dish that I was told was redware. It was purchased from an estate sale in Idaho from a lady who collected redware. I'm not sure where she got this piece, but it looks exactly like some Pennsylvania pieces that I've seen in the past. It has a mustard-colored glaze on the inside and then a gloppy brown/black colored glaze on the outside. It has a chip on one side(please see all pics) but it actually looks like it was chipped a long time ago and then they continued using it because it's not a sharp chip, it's actually smooth from use(I think) There are NO breaks or cracks in this piece. There's lots of tiny, tiny crazing in the mustard glaze. There is a#3 on the bottom. Or, it could be a#2, but I decided it was a 3. Across the top from outside edge to edge it measures ... more14 1/2" long by 10 1/2" wide. It is 2 1/2" deep. A very nice piece to add to your redware collection! Shipping will be $10.00 via USPS. I'm always happy to answer your questions. Thank you for looking!

Antique Oval Redware Baking Dish Manganese Glaze
Here's another large. Oval-shaped, baking dish that I was told was redware that's glazed with manganese. It has black glaze on the inside and on the outside it's an orange-pumpkin color with lots of little glops and drips of black on it. It was purchased from an estate sale in Idaho from a lady who collected redware. I'm not sure where she got this piece. It has a couple of chips(one on each side(please see all pics) from use, but overall there are no breaks or cracks. There are no makers marks on it that I could find. From edge to edge it measures 12 3/8" long by 9 1/2" wide. It is 2 1/4" tall. It is such a primitive-looking piece as it is so"warped" looking. This is a very nice piece to add to your redware collection! Shipping will be $10.00 via USPS. I'm always happy to answer your questions. ... moreThank you for looking!

Ancient Roman Römisch Romana samian pottery shards redware terra sigillata
Roman terra sigillata pottery sherds found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site ... moreof one of the first excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items.
