This is a Japanese sword wakizashi in mountings. The blade is unsigned. Shinogi-zukuri shape. Muromachi period ca.1550 era made blade. The blade is in old polish, shows fine scratches but no rust and in good condition. The temper line is wavy notare temper pattern throughout the blade and has deep temper at the point. The forging grain is itame-hada. No forging dlaws at all. The scabbard is Edo period made urushi lacquered wood scabbard. Shows minor lacquer loss but no dent, no crack and in good condition. The handle is tight fit with old fuchi/ kashira and matched copper menuki. The tsuba is nadekaku shape iron tsuba with nice patina. DESCRIPTION: Antique Japanese sword WAKIZASHI KOSHIRAE with ALL FITTINGS. The SAYA and all fittings are from MIDDLE or LATE EDO period(1700-1867) The TSUNAGI(wooden) blade is Shobu-zukuri(Iris Leaf) shape. Not very common and it's beautiful workmanship. Curvature of the tsunagi and the saya suggests it was a BIZEN school sword. The S aya is black textured lacquer and is in excel lent shape. No scratches or broken pieces. The tsuka has brown ito used and looks very nice. The nakago of th e tsunagi blade has a nice long signature. Signed KANESADA. Famous swordsmith family. The other side of the nakago has wording: TSUKURU KORE MADE THIS. The koshirae has beautiful fittings. Tsuba is from iron. It is SHOAMI SCHOOL. Here is a most interesting Japanese sword brought home by a WW11 U.S. Soldier at the end of WW11. I have shown the sword to a serious collector who has giving me the information I will know pass onto you. The blade started out as a Katana Tachi and was shortened to a Wakizashi. The sword is in custom Gunto Mounts fitted to the blade for use in WW11. Nagasa = 21 3/8. Mihaba = 1 1/8, Kissaki = 1 3/8, Nakago = 6 5/8 one hole 0- Suriage Nakago, Original Nagasa based on Bohi and Sori plus estimate current Sori 3/8, Original Sori estimate 5/8" Kasano =1/4" Mihaba = 1 1/8" Unable to remove habakito identif mure but appears to be a low Iori- mune. Ie gentle oroshi more consistent with a Bizen Blade. The Nakago has one mekugiana. Iron is black with no discernable Yasurine but skillfully shaped. The blades are"relatively" sharp- you may be able to slice a tomato but it would not be a clean slice. I don't think these were ever sharpened or used- and that they came with this edge originally and that it was meant to be handled by a novice and to"not be dangerous" to handle by an untrained or careless individual.
