Japanese antique sword - EARLY SHINTO - EDO (1603-1700) MUMEI - O-WAKIZASHI.
DESCRIPTION: Antique Japanese sword- O-WAKIZASHI( wakizashi close to the length of a katana) with very nice decorated saya. The blade is a early SHINTO period blade. Beginning of EDO(1603-1700) Blade is typical shinogi-zukuri shape. With chu-kissaki tip. It has ITAME-MOKUME grain and a beautiful hamon. The hamon style is MIDARE with Mixed shapes including GUNOME AND TOGARI. The nakago has no signature- so called MUMEI, but has influence of the MINO province school. The saya is has been restored and has very nice design. The tsuka is just bare. Needs to be restored. The blade is made out of TAMAHAGANE. The metal(iron) that's been used in old Japan to make swords. Tsuba is from iron. Simple hand hammered without design maru gata. The habaki is nice silver foil on copper also seppa's are the same. It is described by NBTHK that the swordsmith belongs to Takada school from Bungo province. NBTHK certificate confirmed. The characteristics of this sword is beautiful Hitatsura. The swordsmith gets great influence for Soshu-den. Hamon of this Katana is Midare-ba. Mixed with Choji. Niedeki. Ko-itame Hada, Tsukurikomi is Shinogi-zukuri in recent polish. Even though there are some tiny kitae-kizu, but overall this sword is in good condition and beautiful appearance with age appropriate.
