With both pieces bearing the same maker's mark, same date letter, and same assay mark- making them very collectable. They are both of a half-lobed design on a flat base. With floral embossed decoration and fluted rims. The sugar bowl is simply circular with no handles, and the Milk/Cream Jug has a loop handle and wide spout. Both pieces bear the maker's mark of Vale Brothers& Sermon. Then of Spencer Street Birmingham, and are hallmarked for Birmingham 1888, which means that this set is now some 125 years old! Condition: Both pieces show the expected surface scratches in keeping with age and use. But neither has any deep scratches. Minor flaws: They each have one or two very light marks to the silver. And the interior of both is pieces is a bit grubby. Sugar Bowl: Good used antique condition for the age. German Finnish and Swedish! This is a true piece of Americana and early history. This Bible served as a door-to-door assistant that was used by salesman to piece together custom Bibles for customers. This comes with multiple choices for content. Covers, numerous sections, photo holders, plates, inclusions, sections& more. it is amazingly filled with unbelievable amount of illustrations- B&W, gold trimmed, color-everything you could expect from these large thickly elaborate bibles of the late 1800s that a customer might want, including many Dore plates- some of which are HAND COLORED(VERY rare to find! There are also some random advertisement pages and sheets ... morethroughout describing various editions and highlights offered by the publisher, as well as additional sections in German, Swedish and Finnish. Again. MANY GUSTAVE DORE plates are present in a rare HAND COLORED state, as well as many additional color plates throughout! A rare multi-language version from the late 1890s which is growing quite scarce in the market. This sample is a well used specimen that contains all the necessary examples when the salesman needed them for influence on his customers. And has in turn suffered the requisite damage from so many references. The covers are the original binding, although one board has for the most part detached. The interior binding is intact, with all pages attached, although with some edgewear, soiling, staining, a few small child's scribbles, chips, larger and smaller tears, etc, as shown. 3 spine examples present, as well as the front and rear cover choices, undoubtedly issued in this manner. An extremely interesting Victorian sterling silver vesta case. It is hallmarked for Birmingham 1896 with the maker’s marks being RB S for the Rolason Brothers. It is also marked with a registered design number Rd142822. It has been beautifully made having an unusual ribbed and waved finish rather like a seashell. It is in perfect condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs and the inside is clean and vibrantly gilded. The lid spring is strong and the lid snaps shut. It measures 1.75 inches(4.5cms) excluding the loop. By over 1.25 inches(3.5cms) and weighs a 21 grams. A super quality rare Victorian example. Antique Victorian palm leaf MENU heading - seen in 1900 ATF Specimen Catalog
This is a copper electrotype of heading or header for a MENU. It features the word"menu" in a fancy font across what looks like a palm leaf or branch. It is a very old piece dating to about 1900 or possibly earlier. An example can be seen on page 866 of the American Type Founders Specimen Catalog of 1900. I have downloaded a photo of what it would look like printed. It is copper on type metal mounted on a wooden block. The block measures 15-1/2 picas long X 7-1/2 picas high or about 2-5/8" long X 1-1/2" high. This was an Ebay purchase that I made about 10 years ago but I never got around to using it on a letterpress job. It is in great shape but the wood is showing some small cracks from where the tiny nails went into the wood. It can probably be used but gently! It will be coming from a clean.
