Japanese Bronze Sword Guard 'Tsuba' - Oriental Design
Lovely quality bronze Tsuba adorned with gilt& silver coloured decoration. The piece is decorated with a scene depicting an oriental design. This Tsuba is part of a private collection of these that i have recently bought- all are offered on eBay at a low starting bid and no reserve. Please view my other listings in my eBay shop. This particular one is of excellent quality as seen in the photographs. The tsuba is usually a round or occasionally squarish guard at the end of the grip of bladed Japanese weapons. Like the katana and its various declinations(tachi, wakizashi etc. tanto, or naginata. They contribute to the control of the weapon(the right index finger of the fighter typically touches the tsuba) and to the protection of the hand. The tsuba was mostly meant to be used to prevent the hand from sliding onto the blade during thrusts ... moreas opposed to protecting from an opponent's blade. The chudan no kamae guard is determined by the tsuba and the curvature of the blade. The diameter of the average katana tsuba is 7.5 cm- 8 cm(2.953 inches- 3.15 inches) wakizashi tsuba is 6.2 cm- 6.6 cm(2.441 inches- 2.598 inches) and tanto tsuba is 4.5 cm- 6 cm(1.772 inches- 2.362 inches) During the Muromachi period(1333-1573) and the Momoyama period(1573-1603) Tsuba were more for functionality than for decoration. Being made of stronger metals and designs. During the Edo period(1603-1868) there was peace in Japan so tsuba became more ornamental and made of less practical metals such as gold. You are bidding on one fundo(weight) themed tsuba. The piece measures 7.49cm(2.95” high X 6.65cm(2.62” wide X 0.32cm(125” thick. It is a piece from the Holbrook collection and was described as a theatrical tsuba from the 18 th century. I believe the piece was made much later than that. Possibly in the Meiji period, and it may be made from rolled material. You are bidding on one Japanese tachi tsuba made during the Muromachi period. This mokko shaped tsuba has an iron body and is decorated with a silver alloy fukurin. Some brass ten zogan“dots” surface bori(carving) and lacquer on the surface(a fair amount of which still remains) It has two large namako(sea cucumber) shaped sukashi which are filled with lead. The tsuba measures 7.33cm(2.89” high X 6.93cm(2.73” wide X 0.38cm(15” nakago ana) 0.53cm(21” mimi/fukurin) thick. The person I acquired the piece from told me it had been removed from an old nagamaki koshirae. But I believe this tsuba started out life as a tachi/kodachi tsuba, as the piece shows the characteristic asymmetry about the horizontal axis(bottom lobe is smaller than the top one) The sufrace bori wave patterns are correct when front side of the piece is mounted blade edge down ... moreposition(as it would be mounted on a tachi) the fukurin is joined at the top, etc. I believe the tsuba was made sometime in the Muromachi period. This is a Japanese sword in honzukuri mountings. The blade is signed"Harima Daijo Fujiwara Kiyomitsu 播磨大掾藤原清光" Shinogi-zukuri shape. Edo period ca.1750 era made blade. The blade is in old full polish, no rust, no stain and in good condition. The temper line is deep gunome temper throughout the blade and has ko-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is itame-hada and shows minor coarse forgings. The scabbard is black urushi lacquered wood scabbard. Shows tiny lacquer loss but no dent and in good condition. The handle is tight fit with matched copper fuchi/kashira and brass menuki. Tsuka-ito wrapping is no cut and no loose. The tsuba is mokko shape mantis motif iron tsuba with nice patina.
