The tsuba is in excellent condition aside from where I scratched off the original patina in a couple small areas trying to determine the metals used in production. A nice iron tanto Higo fuchi kashira decorated with gold nunome cherry blossoms with some silver tendrils. The iron has good color and texture. The fuchi measures 34mm. Condition is very good and is probably of the mid Edo period(1700's) The accompanying kashira is of a rare cat's back shape unique to Higo and has slight remains of gold nunome on the raised base boarder. A very good iron Higo fuchi kashira decorated with fine gold nunome pine saplings. The color of the iron is a very nice purple black. The taikogata shaped fuchi is a good larger size measuring 38.5mm. It has a recessed copper tenjogane base which is a typical Higo trait. The surfaces show yakite-kusarashi or intended corrosion spots to create surface texture. condition is very good and probably of the mid Edo period(1700's) The accompanying kashira is of a rare cat's back shape unique to Higo without any decoration. e Japanese WW II sword in civilian mountings, Gendai "Kaneshige", tsuba
This is a Japanese WWll sword in civilian mountings. The blade is signed"Noshu Seki Kaneshige saku 濃州住兼重作" with hot stamp and 昭 inspection stamp on the tang. Shinogi-zukuri shape. WWll time period ca.1940 era made. Kaneshige's real name is Murayama Shigeaki. Was born in 1883 in Seki city, Gifu prefecture, made swords during WWll time period and after the war as a gendai sword smith, listed in John Slough's book page 64. 65. The blade is traditional hand forged, water tempered, in oiginal polish, shows light staines on surface but no rust and in good condition. The temper line is wavy gunome temper pattern throughout the blade and has deep o-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaws at all. There is no bend. No nicks, no crack and cutting edge is sharp. The blade is mounted in civilian ... moremountings, scabbard is urushi lacquered wood scabbard, no dent, no crack, no lacquer loss and in good condition. The handle is tight fit brass fuchi/kashira. Tsuka-ito wrapping is no loose. No cut and in good condition. The tsuba is Edo period made iron tsuba signed"Umetada Makiba-no suke, Shigeyoshi saku 埋忠牧馬之助, 重義作" The blade measures 26+7/8" tip to the guard, 26+1/8" cutting edge, 1+1/4" width, 7.5mm thickness at the notch and 38+3/4" in mountings. Description Set of 2 Imperial Daisho Japanese Swords- Set of 2 Imperial Japanese Swords- The daisho or matched set of swords are mounted in formal scabbards with Tokugawa mon and the fuchi(lower handle fitting) bears the samurai's clan mon- Unless these belonged to a wealthy samurai who could afford two sets of swords. He likely had a set of plain sacquer scabbards to be used for everyday wear- These blades appear to have been made by the same maker- which is rare- please see photos- Both swords have wakizashi- close to the length of a katana being called o-wakizashi and wakizashi closer to tanto length being called ko-wakizashi. The wakizashi being worn together with the katana was the official sign that the wearer was a samurai or swordsman of feudal Japan.
