This is an Iron Tsuba. Open Work, from the Edo Period, 1603- 1868. The tsuba is usually a round or occasionally squarish guard at the end of the grip of bladed Japanese weapons. They contribute to the balance of the weapon and to the protection of the hand. The tsuba was mostly meant to be used to prevent the hand from sliding onto the blade during thrusts as opposed to protecting from an opponent's blade. During the Muromachi period(1333–1573) and the Momoyama period(1573–1603) Tsuba were more for functionality than for decoration. Being made of stronger metals and designs. During the Edo period(1603–1868) there was peace in Japan so tsuba became more ornamental and made of less practical metals such as gold. T suba are usually finely decorated. For your consideration is this exceptional antique wooded storage box that once housed a fine‘Tsuba. No‘Tsuba’ The lacquered image on the cover. In the shape of a‘Tsuba, depicts a windy character blowing out a cloud of sand. That image overlays a circle with 3 carved leaves. Also in the lower left corner might be the Artist signature. Not sure. I’m guessing the wood is, Cherry. This is a really well crafted box, all three pieces are hand carved from blocks of solid wood. There are No glue joints. The Tray measures 5 inches by 7 inches. The box is 3-5/8 by 5-1/4 inches and is 1-1/2 inches tall. As you can see in one of the picture that the lid does not fit properly. That is because the bottom of the box is warped somewhat. So even though there is no‘Tsuba’ the box by itself should be considered a fine work of Art and Craftsmanship.
