HUGE C1840 CHINESE GOLD GILT LACQUER TEA CADDY W LGE SINGLE PEWTER CANNISTER 12"
For your consideration we have here a superb early 19c Chinese export gold gilt tea caddy of considerable size which is just under 12" wide with a single heavy pewter canister with a hinged lid and very thick walls. This great caddy was produced in Canton. China around c1840 and was exported to America and arrived on the East coast where most all the trading ships came into as the previous owners purchased it there from a large house sale back in the 1970s. This is about as large as this type of caddy was made with a good thick walled box lacquered with vignettes of figures in outdoor pavillion settings drinking tea while being served with floral, fern and Buddhist symbols decorating around the busy painted reserves. The inside has a wonderful double opposing fern on the inner lid with a large and heavy pewter canister having a hinged ... morelid with turned knob and is nicely engraved with figural decoration. The hinges are of a heavy gauge along with a'Patent' heavy duty lock assembly that does work but no key and because of the amount and cost of the tea the owners did not want any of the help taking the tea home with them so good sturdy locks were ordered. Condition is good but there is age wear and can be expected although all four sides are excellent with little wear as it is mainly the top and both sides of the lid and the underside from moving it about and the inside is also very good with just some wear in the inside corners of the lid and I would say 50 to 60 years ago there was some touch ups performed on the outside corners mainly again on the lid but all in all a fabulous and rare size caddy which displays beautifully. Sizes: Width 11-3/4" x Depth 8-1/4" x Height 6-1/2" and the weight is 8ibs 8.5ozs. A wonderful opportunity for the collector to own a very large and impressive gilt lacquer caddy. Antique Hand-Painted Japanese KUTANI PORCELAIN COVERED JAR Biscuit or Tea Caddy
Don't know a whole lot about these. So here goes.This is believed to be an antique Kutani porcelain lidded jar, hand-painted with the traditional Japanese Geisha figures, temples, flowers, and landscape scenes. I don't believe this is a ginger jar- the shape and lid are wrong- and am assuming this is some sort of biscuit jar or tea caddy. This jar is made up of four connected heart-shaped curved panels or lobes, giving the top a four-leaved clover shape, and it stands on four little stubby"feet" one at the bottom of each heart shape. It stands about 5-3/4" tall without the lid in place, 7-1/4" to the top of the lid handle with the lid on, and is about 4-1/2" wide at the top edge of the jar. It is decorated with swags of red and green paint around the top rim and around the edge of the lid, and these have been ... moretrimmed with gold paint, as are the geisha's kimonos, the temples, and several of the flowers. Both jar and lid are in excellent antique condition with no chips or paint loss(except for the edge of one heart shape and some patches on the rim of the lid, where it looks like the original paint did not stick very well) There is an old paper label affixed to the bottom of the jar, but I have no idea what the characters on the label mean. This Vishniakov pre revolution russian lacquer box is in excellent condition. Minor issue on the lip under the lid. The painting is a wonderfully detailed troika with great paint and color. Though faint. There remains the seal of the Vishniakov factory. Well over 100 years old, this would make a wonderful addition to any collection. VINTAGE DECO DESIGN LOZENGE-SHAPED"TEA CADDY" Crawfords Biscuit Tin This is a very nice. Early Crawfords Biscuits tin, which has a pleasing, Deco lozenge-shape. It has a lift-up, hinged lid with a long, bar-type knob, adding a pleasing detail to this geometric shape. The knob or handle has a very small ding, which doesn't really show, but mentioned for accuracy. This attractive tin has enamelled decoration on it. In a geometric style, echoing the shape and design of the tin. This is all meant to imitate wood and inlay, the background brown colour has a texture like polished walnut wood and the banding could be gold or metal inlay, with black and ivory-coloured lozenges, again I feel that this was meant to represent ebony and ivory. So the whole piece is done like an earlier design of tea-caddy and I believe was meant to kept ... moreas a keepsake and used to store tea. There is also slight denting on a couple of sides. It is negligible and I don't feel it detracts and it is not serious damage. The enamel does have overall scratching, if you look at the photograph, you will see what I mean. I feel it kind of adds to the character of this early tin, ones in pristine condition can fetch into three figures, so as an affordable collector's item, this is a good place to start. I love tins and have many of them. I have a couple of duplicates of this one. And I use them to store tea and also jewellery and other bits and pieces- so I am trimming down a bit and offering this one here. It is good inside; there is wear to the tinned surface inside, but it's ok and I would use it as it stands. This is also great for décor. This is an estate piece from the W.M.V.Hoffman estate. Formerly of Tuxedo Park and N.Y.C. The Hoffman family made their fortune in N.Y.C. real estate and trace their lineage back to Garit Storm(see my website for more) Their ancestors included Groverneur and Kemble, merchants in the China trade in the late 18th century. I believe that this piece was one of the items from the merchant trade. The piece is a ceramic/ pottery lidded urn. Box, tureen or tea caddy, approx. 4-1/8" tall without the lid and approx. 5-3/4" with the lid on to the top of the fish or dolphin fin. The urn is an elongated octagonal shape. This is an antique Chinese pewter tea caddy. Signed on the base. It has five painted glass panels, each one showing a different scene. Three of the panels are signed, two with a red stamp, and one with red stamp and Chinese characters above(this is the panel with the horse and two men) The artwork is amazing- the paintingsare highly detailed, with beautiful colors and brushstrokes.
