A fabulous rare Arts and Crafts Sideboard by Leonard Wyburd. Designer for Liberty during the Arts and Crafts period. I have a picture of the first version of the sideboard in the Studio magazine dated 1902 and retailing for £34! The sideboard is in excellent condition. It has a true Liberty style with a hint of the Macintosh style. I bought this piece in 2008 to go with my Macintosh collection. Lovely metal handles and heart shape key holes. Judging from hardware on drawers the chest was converted to a sideboard circa 1860-1880. Sideboard was obtained from Scotland. The sideboard was used on a daily basis. It is in good condition but does have a large crack in the back of the shelf and corner pieces missing from the top crown. Which is a seperate piece. And this item is right up there amongst the best I have sold: a stunning, period, sewing caddy, or, sewing table, designed by Peter Hayward for Vanson Furniture. In production from the late 1950's up until the late 1960's. T his quirky little table is full of character and is absolutely of it's time- showcasing so much of what was so good. Of the period: brave modernist design, sharp lines, angles galore and heaps of asymmetry. It's heavily influenced by some of the great modernist pieces that were coming out of Denmark at that time. ... moreAnd it's made from a beautiful teak veneer, although the colour is so nice it is somewhat like rosewood. The legs are of solid beech. The drawer handles are integral and recessed. Beautiful. It's a practical piece too. With a good sized storage space beneath the hinged lid and two slide-out drawers. It even comes complete with the original tray which sits on runners in the main compartment. Everything has been lined with removable orange felt by the careful previous owner. This is a very genuine little piece having been in full use. As intended, until just recently(and if you click on my other listings you will see that I am selling all of the contents- vintage cotton reels and the like- separately) Today it could of course be used as originally intended. It bears the Blue Erol label It's superbly crafted and made entirely from solid elm. And the dovetailed corners at the top and bottom of each side emphasise how well constructed it is, as do the full length hinges which are fitted to the doors. The 3 dovetailed drawers and the 2 doors are fitted with very stylish oval inset handles which prove to be such an appealing feature. Drawers are Dove Tailed. inside is very solid thick wood. top has 14 inch glass windows on each side and is 30 inches tall. This is a 2 pc and top will come off with just a few bolts. Very minor and small area wear the finish has chipped off. I will answer any questions you may have. This fabulous Victorian sideboard features an abundance of beautiful carvings from top to bottom.the carved pediment having a shell carving at the center of raised panels of burl. Stick and ball, vertical slats,a carved fruit basket at the center top with floral& foliate carved supports with carved lions resting on the beautiful brown marble top. Intricate floral& foliate carvings on the base top and cabinet doors. This sideboard also has it original large wood casters intact on the base with what we believe to be the original beveled mirrors which are in beautiful antique condition with only some very minimal spotting. This sideboard measures 88 1/2 inches in total height(7' 4 1/2" ... moreHeight to the top shelf from the floor measures 78 inches, height from the floor to the marble top measures 38 1/4 inches, with a total width of 48 inches and depth front to back of 22 inches at the base and this sideboard weighs approximately 165 lbs but does disassemble into 4 pieces for easier handling during shipping and moving.The large original beveled mirror measures 39 1/4 inches wide by 17 1/4 inches high. The original brown marble top is in fantastic antique condition with no issues we can find. There is a couple of old repairs on the vertical slats at the top that appear solid and secure and not an issue in my opinion.
