The top of this dresser is constructed from two pieces of oak. The dresser features mahogany cross-banding to the top and fronts of the drawers. The dresser base consists of three working hand dovetailed oak lined drawers which feature brass escutcheons and brass swan neck handles. The drawers are cock-beaded and fronts are cross-banded with mahogany. The top features a moulded edge design is repeated on the apron. The dresser frame is constructed using the traditional pegged construction method. The drawers are oak lined with the original backboards and the dresser sits on elegant cabriole shaped legs. Manufacture date unknown, but I suspect late 1800's to early 1900's based on several similar examples I found on the Internet. Cabinet seems very solid. It is extremely heavy. Drawers and doors all work smoothly. The door on the left has a hairline fracture line(see third picture above) I cannot determine if this was a natural occurance or as a result of some other damage. It does not appear to have been repaired by any method that I can determine. But I am also not an expert in furniture repair. This is a very nice piece. But has some small blemishes. It appears this piece is in original state and shows no signs of refinishing, from my opinion. If you prefer more photos, please feel free to request them. Because of its weight. Outer case with metal hardware encases five black lacquer inner boxes with nashiji(gold sprinkled lacquer) interiors. Two of these inner boxes are still wrapped in very old newspaper which indicates that this set has not been used for decades. Above the stacking boxes is a very useful shallow drawer which would be perfect for pens, small electronics, or utensils of many sorts. The exterior box measures approximately 22 3/4" tall, 10 3/4" deep, and 10 3/4" wide, making it the perfect desktop size. The entire piece bears signs of wear and use commensurate with being approximately 130-150 years old, but is solidly constructed with outstanding character in the traditional Japanese Samurai aesthetic. This handsome set was recently purchased in Japan, and would make an absolutely superb home, office, or travelling storage chest. See all 11 photos above left. It measures 12 ¼” tall x 13 ... more¼” wide x 7 ½” deep and has lovely turned walnut knobs and lively side cuts at the base. The top and drawer faces feature red striped edges framing free-hand floral decoration in red and green under an original layer of golden varnish. The drawer fronts are excellent; the top has a split along the back edge. Round water marks and wear to the paint. This chest is fresh from a northern Indiana estate and has un-touched dirty surface. I don’t think the surface has been enhanced since the 1800s but you will note numerous round, wire nail repairs along the back rabbet into which the back slips with some splits and wood loss. These don’t affect the integrity of the piece particularly, but are worth noting. One of the drawers grabs a bit when opening and closing, the others work nicely. A lovely form, hand dovetailed drawers and detailed carving on all edges and trim including dentition on three sides around the top. It has small cabinets behind the ornately carved dragon doors in the hutch section as well as display shelves, and has drawers across the top with more open cabinet space below in the base section, which is where you see the traditionally older construction front to back planking across the bottom. I've included a number of photographs in an attempt to accurately represent the design, quality, condition, construction and overall beauty of this fantastic piece as well as a detailed description above. This piece was recently imported from the UK through Edinburgh, Scotland and is truly a rare find, especially in such wonderful condition. This antique heavy carved sideboard with hutch top stand 85 inches tall and measures 69 inches wide and 17 inches deep. Front to back. It travels easy in two pieces- the top hutch top measuring 69 wide by 12 front to back by 50 inches tall. The two cabinets behind the beautifully carved doors in the top are each 13 1/2 inches wide by 9 inches deep front to back and 24 inches tall, with a shelf splitting that space with 11 inches clearance above the cabinet base and 9 inches clearance across the shelf. There are also display shelves, with 9 1/2 inches clearance above the base below the shelf, then 12 inches clearance above the first shelf and 24 inches of clearance above the second shelf, below the exquisitely carved bonnet or cornice. Below are three drawers across the top of the base. Each 18 inches wide by 13 front to back by 4 inches deep and further below behind two doors open cabinet space 64 inches wide by 15 1/2 inches front to back by 17 inches tall.
