Here is a great Satsuma China Tea Pot with a Reed Handle. The handle can be removed by bending the wire end pieces. The decoration has has Elderly Men all around the pot. The main colors are orange and white with gold trim throughout. The inside is gloss white. The colors on the outside are bright as shown in the photos. The Teapot is 4 3/4" tall to the top of the handle and 5" in diameter at the widest point. There are no cracks or chips. The piece is marked with Oriental Characters on the spout as shown in the 3rd and next to last photos. The bottom has a partial blue mark that can be seen in the last photo. I left the old note put on by another owner with the information on the signature location on the bottom. This Satsuma Teapot is in Very Good Condition and would display well on any table or cabinet. The piece is characteristic of the fine cast porcelain figures produced in Kutani for export during the Taisho/ early Showa period. The Hotei is very nicely executed with crisp mold and fine embossed detail to his jovial facial features. Robed dress and characteristic bag and fan. Vtg 1920's JAPANESE COBALT SATSUMA 10" VASE marked TAIZAN from TAISHO PERIOD
1920's Japanese Cobalt Satsuma 10" Vase Marked"Taizan" 泰山) Beautiful deep cobalt background with a raised enamel floral design. The first generation of Taizan potters worked circa 1673 to 1680. The Taizan kiln appears to have closed around 1894. However in 1895 and 1901 reports have it that Taizan is still working"on a comparatively small scale" The production seems to have been maintained until 9th Taizan(Yohei) died in 1922. Based on the above and the fact that the vase is also marked"Made in Japan" The practice of which started around 1921, that would date this vase from the about 1921 or 1922. No chips or cracks. A few imperfections from when the vase was made on the bottom of the vase. There is a line that encircles the entire vase. Three are from the Hindu-Buddhist pantheon of India( Daikokuten. Bishamonten. Benzaiten) and three from Chinese Taoist-Buddhist traditions( Hotei. Jurōjin. Fukurokuju) In Japan. They travel together on their treasure ship( Takarabune) and visit human ports on New Year's Eve to dispense happiness to believers. The base is signed with the characters for Ku-Tani as well as the potter’s signature or name. This vase was most likely made in the 1970s or 1980s and is well turned. There are no scratches. Beautiful on all sides with superb hand decoration depicting an imperial lady clad in a stunning kimono gazing out into her garden. While her courtesan brings her a golden bowl of tea. Masterful attention to detail in the silk brocades, individual flower petals, flowing draperies, floor tiles, Asian architecture, hundreds of tiny gold pinpoint sized dots, etc. Too much to list, please see eleven photos for all the museum quality artistry. The reverse is equally sublime with an elegant naturescape of flowers, clouds, and sculptural rocks set before a gently flowing stream. Perhaps this is the view outside of her study. Porcelain bowl, with exquisite art decor, featuring very colorful scenes of chrysanthemums, other flowers, bluebirds, flowing water. It is marked on the bottom with the gold Shimazu mon mark above a two character signature below that, within a red square. I believe this is the Bizan mark or very close to it, which should date it to the Taisho period of 1912-1926 or possibly later.
