An extremely scarce and rare antique Japanese Satsuma plate 9" dia. No chips, no cracks, no restoration, signed Tanzan. The image, in the center of this plate is a painted copy of a photograph by Herbert Ponting. Please read the following information: Tanzan Seikai. A Kyoto potter began his business in 1851. His son Yoshitaro took over in 1865. For the most part. Tanzan wares available in today's market date from 1880-1910. Tanzan pottery wares can be found in a variety of styles and techniques. and this plate. In my opinion, is the scarcest and rarest. It dates circa 1905 or a bit earlier, the painted image in the center was copied from a photograph by Herbert Ponting. From research. Over the years, I concluded that Tanzan, Taizan and Kinkozan produced some plates with a central reserve copied from photographs, from the series of ... morephotographs of Japan by Herbert Ponting. Old Satsuma Barrel Form Jar with Cover, Fabulous!!!
For your consideration is a wonderful and elegant old Satsuma decorated jar in the form of a barrel with lid. Probably a tea caddy. Or possibly for tobacco. The workmanship in these older pieces is exquisite. With great detail. The jar must have taken many hours to complete. Stands about 6" high to top of crysanthemum knopf. And about 5" wide. In great condition with no damage. I believe there is a signature on the side, under the red and gold circle. It is black, and enclosed within a gold reserve. Features two warriors on one side. Three children on the other. Every inch of this jar is decorated with lovely gold, red blue and peach enameling. The handle of the lid is in the form of a chrysanthemum. Just a beautiful. It is hand painted and signed. The hand painted details are vivid and colorful. The moriage is spectacular giving depth and dimension to the scene. The images are primarily outlined with moriage slip trailed cream enamel and ornately detailed with moriage orange. Blue, white, green and yellow enamels in high relief. It measures 5 1/4" tall. 3" at the widest point, ... more2 1/8" base, 1 7/8" rim. It has a small chip, less than 1/4" on the inside of the rim, it is barely noticeable due to its blue coloring, please see picture number 6. Please look very carefully at all pictures as it depicts the entire item with full details. And it is part of the description. Other than what I have disclosed above. It is in excellent shape. There are no chips, cracks, scratches, crazing or discoloration. This would make a wonderful addition to anyone's collection. It is truly a beautiful piece to own, display and/or use. Vintage Satsuma Covered Urn Raised Gold
Up for the auction is a lidded Japanese Satsuma urn probably from the beginning of the 20th century. The body of the urn is covered with the traditional scenes with Japanese women dressed in kimono on both sides and the flowers in between(pics. 1-5) The urn has a lid that is also decorated with the flowers and a butterfly(pic. 6) All the decorative elements have raised gold trim surrounding the paintings(pics. 7-11) The urn has a mark on the bottom as shown on pic. 12. Something that my aunt collected, but I do not know if it is or not(please look at last photo) The top diameter is about 4" And the bottom is about2 1/2" and it stands 2" high. The outer edge of the rim has been painted brown. The decorations around the outside feel a bit raised and I think they may be hand painted. There is green and brown and gilt. The vase is small at 3" tall. 3" wide and only 1" wide. Lovely colors, trimmed in gold wih moriage detail. There is a little loss of gold on the handles from use, 2 tiny black spots missing from the back and a flea bite at the godess's cheek. KOREAN SATSUMA WARE CUP & SAUCER SETS / EXCELLENT
This is an Excellent Matching Cup& Saucer Sets in Korean Satsuma Ware. Obtained in South Korea between the years 1994 to 1998. Satsuma Ware originated when the Shimazu Prince of the Satsuma Domain in Southern Kyushu abducted skilled Korean potters to establish a local pottery industry in the 16th Century. If we have our timeline correct. The condition is Excellent and is free of cracks, crazing(at least that which was not intentional by the potter) staining, or repairs. There is one Exceptionally small chip on the underside of one of the cups that is less than 1/16" in size, and yes we are being very picky. It is Not Visible. The Set includes the following: Two Cup& Saucer Sets. The Cups measure 3 1/4" in diameter at its widest girth by 2 7/8" in height while the saucers measure 5" in diameter. VINTAGE DECORATIVE SATSUMA PORCELAIN CHARGER PLATE 10.5 in PEACOCKS & MUMS
Satsuma Charger porcelain plate has a very nice design of two peacocks. Chrysanthemums, cherry blossom trees on an ecru colored background. The border of the plate has a deep pumpkin color background with gold painted swirled designs and small chrysanthemum flowers. There is very mild paint loss to the outside edges where the previous owner had used a plate hanger for wall display. There are no chips or cracks, there is however crazing. This is true to Sasuma form and style and is expected to be there in the design. The charger measures approximately 10.5 inches across, and still has the original foil label. my camera glare caused a white out of the label) Not a new production piece.
