What is a CounterMark? During the many years that Rome ruled the Mediterranean World. A number of Roman coins were countermarked by various governing authorities and even by usurpers. As one or more of these countermarked coins is almost certain to be encountered by anyone seriously pursuing the field of Roman coinage. It is surprising that there is not at least one comprehensive text available on the subject. Instead, the interested person must turn to the introduction in such general works as Coins of the Roman Empire in the British Museum(the most quoted source) Roman Imperial Coinage, and to a number of articles and monographs discussing various ... moreaspects of the subject or particular groups of countermarks. The definition of a countermark, has for unknown reasons. Been avoided by most writers on the subject. This may have caused some past confusion with such terms as"punched, counterpunched" and"overstruck. So let us begin by saying, a countermarked coin is one which has had a secondary stamp impressed upon it at sometime subsequent to its original minting. This countermarking could be done to a relatively new coin or to a coin which had been in circulation for many years. Because of the need for anyone interested in Roman coinage to know when he or she is observing a countermarked coin. To know the purposes for the use of such marks and to encourage further investigation when such marks are encountered, I have chosen to introduce this subject to my readers in outline form. For this purpose, after a brief introduction, I have listed some of the most interesting and illustrative types of Roman countermarks together with their striking authority and purposes for their use. He played a critical role in the gradual transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. In 60 BC. Their attempts to amass power through populist tactics were opposed by the conservative elite within the Roman Senate, among them Cato the Younger with the frequent support of Cicero. Caesar's conquest of Gaul, completed by 51 BC, extended Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. Caesar became the first Roman general to cross both when he built a bridge across the Rhine and conducted the first invasion of Britain. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. Filled with power struggles, battles, and betrayals, this book is dramatic, entertaining, and even be educational. The sixth and final entry in a series that traces the last days of the Roman Republic, including the events leading up to the assassination of Julius Caesar and the aftermath of that famous murder. A Governor in a sleepy quarter of the Empire. Septimius saw a golden opportunity after the murder of Pertinax and with the pretense of avenging his murder he recruited an army and advanced towards Rome. Known in English as Constantine II. 316-340) was Roman Emperor from 337 to 340. The eldest son of Constantine the Great and Fausta. He was born at Arles. And was raised as a Christian. On March 1. 317. Constantine was made Caesar. And at the age of seven in 323, took part in his father's campaign against the Sarmatians. At the age of ten he became commander of Gaul. After the death of his half-brother Crispus. An inscription dating to 330 records the title of Alamannicus. ... moreSo it is probable that his generals won a victory over the Alamanni. His military career continued when Constantine I elected his son field commander during the 332 campaign against the Goths. Following the death of his father in 337. Constantine II became emperor jointly with his brothers Constantius II and Constans. After the division of the empire. Made by the three brothers in September of the same year in Pannonia, he ruled over Gaul. Britannia and Hispania. He was involved in the struggle between the different Christian streams. The Western portion of the empire leaned towards Catholicism and against Arianism. And Constantine freed Athanasius and allowed him to return to Alexandria. This action also put some burden on Constantius II. Who was a supporter of Arianism. At first. He was the guardian of his younger brother Constans, whose portion was Italia. Africa and Illyricum. As Constans came of age. Constantine would not relinquish the guardianship and in 340 he marched against Constans in Italy, but was defeated at Aquileia and he was killed in an ambush in Cervignano del Friuli. Constans came to control his deceased brother's realm.

Pierced Earrings pair, Roman, Silver-tone Gray Optical Glass rectangle, 7/8"
Pair of Earrings Roman post pierced I don't know the age- 1980s? pierced. Stud, post style silver tone set with a squared off cabochon of gray optical glass I think the gray optical set in silver is very sharp and tailored looking. These would be a great career pair singed on the backs of the earrings and also on the plastic portion of the backs 7/8 inch long mint condition P lease look at the photos and read the description before buying. If you still have questions. Please do request additional information or clarification on an item before buying. If possible, I will answer your questions or add additional photos. Remember that photos and objects will not necessarily be the same size. The size of a photo when viewed will depend upon your monitor and settings. And some objects are larger than you computer monitor and some smaller than ... moreyour monitor. This might seem elementary, but it does come up frequently. Colors can vary with your monitor settings. Sizing can vary with different garments and different brands. Vintage garments run smaller than more recently manufactured garments. It is important to note the measurements in the description. The measurements are of the actual garment. And not of the body the garment will fit. You will want to fit the garment over your body and still move comfortably. If the fabric doesn't stretch you will usually want a garment to be bigger than you are. Additionally. If you want a relaxed fit, or to wear it over other layers, you will need a garment that reflects this in its size. It is often more accurate to compare the measurements to a favorite and well fitting garment of similar style which you already own. Than to your own measurements. I measure the chest as armpit to armpit. Times two. Jewelry will be the size listed in the description. If you are unsure how big a particular measurement is. I do recommend consulting with a measuring tape or ruler to help visualize the item's size. Please note the measurements in the description for the size of items! Internat
