FERTILITY HEAD/FEMALE FIGURE, CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN, WESTERN MEXICO
FERTILITY HEAD/FEMALE FIGURE. CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN. WESTERN MEXICO Length: 2 1/2" Width: 1 3/4" Thick: 1/2" Weight: 8 oz This Pre-Columbian Female Fertility Effigy comes from the Mexican state of Jalisco. It was part of a major 19th century collection assembled by an American banker. The ancient Chupicuaro devoted their time and skills to creating pottery figurines. And other small artifacts. Characteristically flat. Chupícuaro human figurines can also be realistically three dimensional or shaped into vessels. They are distinguished by their slanted, coffee-bean shaped eyes. The figurines are typically depicted as female, indicated by a part in the center of the hair or headdress, and can be fashioned with intricately molded clay clothing and jewelry. Most figurines were left unpainted, but occasionally some were decorated ... morewith bright colors. Hundreds of years later, the remnants of red paint can still be seen on some of their faces and jewelry. This artifact was used to promote fertility among the ancients. Typically it was nightly placed atop the female womb with the requisite prayers and rituals. While broken from a larger piece. This artifact maintains the paint integrity and the remarkable detail of the Chupicuaro culture. On Aug-06-13 at 21:26:33 PDT. Seller added the following information: Posted with

Precolumbian sculpture #58, Teotihuacán, ancient Mexican art, pre-columbian art
Precolumbian head from Teotihuacán. Mexico(1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 500 A.D. or older(That is 1,000 years or more before Cortez invaded Mexico and conquered the Aztecs. The Aztecs, who arrived in the Valley of Mexico long after Teotihuacán was abandoned, named the ruins Teotihuacán- place of the gods. The Aztecs and the Greeks had the same word for gods- teo. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1.5 inches high. I apologize for not providing metric dimensions. I live in a country that clings to ancient English measuring systems instead of the clearly superior and much more functional metric system. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico City, in 1966 or 1967, when ... moreI was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, and look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. Photos show front. Side, and back. Extremely Rare Pre-Columbian Ceremonial Pipe and Vase - antique pottery
Extremely Rare Pre-Columbian Pottery Ceremonial Pipe and Vase- antique pottery It is my understanding that the two items were found during the original excavation of the Panama Canal. The vase is missing the head. Which I was told looked the same as the head on the pipe. I contacted Christies of New York about auctioning the items. As they do not have an auction category for these items, they have referred me to a specialist. As I don't have much in the way of patience, I am now offering these pieces on Ebay. Sotheby's also responded to these pieces, but since their auction estimate was under $5.000, they will not sell it. The pieces are about three inches square. Apiece. What they are worth is up to you! Happy Bidding! Aloha Joe

HEAD FIGURES, PAIR. CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN, WESTERN MEXICO
HEAD FIGURES. PAIR. CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN. WESTERN MEXICO Length: 1 3/4" Width: 1 1/4" Thick: 1 1/4" Weight: 8 oz These TWO Pre-Columbian HEAD figures come from the Mexican state of Jalisco. It was part of a major 19th century collection assembled by an American banker. The first head figure is an orange/tan grit. The head supports a bonnet-style head dress. Unique hole-through ear spools can be seen. Slant eyes and abraided nose. That peculiar mouth twist. Or grimace can also be seen here. Label remains on back. The second piece is grey/tan in color. One ear spool can be seen along with slant eyes and oval mouth below nose. Both pieces show good facial detail; these are two of the smaller ones listed. The ancient Chupicuaro devoted their time and skills to creating pottery figurines. And other small artifacts. Characteristically ... moreflat. Most figurines were left unpainted, but occasionally some were decorated with bright colors. Hundreds of years later, the remnants of red paint can still be seen on some of their faces and jewelry. While broken from a larger piece. This artifact maintains the paint integrity and the remarkable detail of the Chupicuaro culture. On Aug-11-13 at 15:14:36 PDT.
